What do you use for a visual time reference in track view?

I use the metronome bus as my timing reference and feed it to musicians i'm recording.  What are some options for displaying these clicks or some other timing reference on the track view?  E.g. I want to see what side of the beat the drummers snare hits are..
Note 95% of my recordings do not use any midi instruments.

I would create a click track instead of using a metronome.

I would use a softsynth, choose a suitable sound, create a suitable 1-bar or 2-bar pattern in Piano Roll View, then repeat it to the end of the project.
