Wav drawing slowness and such...Just wana know something.
Hello again...I just did a session with x3e..16 tracks at once....and I noticed that it seems when recording the track's Wav forms get drawn out while recording...it seems correctly so done?....But after recording (stop), the wav forms get redrawn again, and takes some time to get done doing this....Why is this done twice?...once while recording, and once after recording? Now when this is being redrawn...can I do things like un arm tracks, and fiddle around to get play back ready?, or move the now marker to the end of that recording, to start a new recording afterwards? dropping markers to name the tune? ...or should I wait it out before doing anything? Just want to know...to avoid any corruptions...and why this is done twice?.

I think you can switch off waveform preview. Needless waste of resources it is. Then again, I don't know if switching off preview has any affect on the speed of the final drawing.

I can turn it off? (whoop whoop hurray)...what am I turning off if I do turn off preview?. cause that second drawing takes a long long time sometimes!..if not always here. Thanks for the info Kalle R.

"Waveform Preview" and "Display Waveform Preview While Recording" are two different settings. It's the latter you want to disable. The final creation of waveforms after recording happens slowly because it's executed in a low-priority thread so as to not take away CPU cycles from more important things. If the waveform never appears, it's possible that you've exceeded the Picture Cache disk quota. If that happens, you can either empty the picture cache or increase the maximum size.

Ok thanks for the correction in direction, to stopping the preview wav form view in record mode, bitflipper...In the preferences/customization/ display /tab. Still I believe, (I did not try it out yet, but made the change for next time) that the drawing after recording will still be very slow?...The above only stops the drawing while recording...I assume.?...So if a preview is made while recording..is it not accurate enough to help the second drawing move along faster?..if the bakers use this first drawing info to render that second draw?...cause from what I see happening.. the second drawing is done completely all over again..?..assuming it does not take from the first to render the second, as it takes so long to do that second drawing. So some questions are still floating around my head that are in the thread....Can I do other things in Sonar while this drawing is going on, or should I wait it out, as I do?...(would it cause issues or corruption of X, if I did things in Sonar to speed things along for the next tune to be recorded?) Some times once recording has stopped, I need to drop a marker, name it, and move the time line marker to the end of the tune, and get ready for the next song they want to do, as they like to just rock it out as it comes to them... In some cases ,they start playing without the thumbs up from me, cause it takes so long to get things drawn in the wav pane, and I WAIT IT OUT , Then drop and name, , move and reset time line bar, and re engage the record button....And I miss getting the start of their tunes from the beginning ...sometimes. I guess long uninterrupted 3-4 hr recordings of the whole Jam session (as I was doing in past) then once drawn in completely at the end, to make the necessary adjustments and marker drops after all is done is better at capturing the impatient band members methods of conduct....Has less loss of inspirational material....and does not make them wait for a thumbs up from me, when they want to rock out their songs...cause magic happens sometimes when it is left to be freely done like that. But I thought I would ask the Pro's what , If any solutions, and or how to do,..or if I can do...To prosper me in the stop and start methods now being used....and will be used when we start doing one song at a time, with overdubs and retakes. I will revert back to the old ways for this band, and practice mode...because as I said, it takes too long to draw in the wav forms...no matter what I turn off, it would seem...I assume?....and they do not have time to waste waiting on me at this point....As they only come for 3-4 hours and have a lot of material to practice in that time, once a week....and waiting on me, only takes away from that time they have to practice....is all. Cheers!

So if a preview is made while recording..is it not accurate enough to help the second drawing move along faster? It's the same waveform, so if it's created as you're recording it won't re-create it afterward. Can I do other things in Sonar while this drawing is going on, or should I wait it out, as I do? It's asynchronous; you needn't wait for it to complete. I usually do, though, just because I don't want the CPU doing other stuff while I'm recording or mixing. But as long as you've got enough CPU horsepower, there's no problem. If you're recording 3-4 hour jams then yeh, it's going to take awhile to draw those pictures. I can see where that might kill the vibe if you had to stop and wait for them. I'd try to have the computer keyboard nearby so I could just hit the hotkey to insert markers on the fly and worry about naming them later.

GOOD Point,.. dropping markers on the fly without stopping the record mode...I will look into that and hot keys next. Thanks!

Make sure the picture cache is properly sized. If the cache is too small, SONAR will be forced to redraw the pictures each time rather than relying on the cache.
