How to delete entire sections of a song
Hi Sonar friends. Sorry if this has been answered before, but it did not come up in a forum search. How do I remove an entire section of a song - for example the silence before the start of my song is very long and I want to cut out some measures right across all tracks. I know there's a way I just can't figure it out. P.S. this forum has been an awesome source of intelligence and tips helping me master sonar. Keep up the good work compadres.

Google sonar x3 adding measures to a song... it'll get you to the right link in the manual and deleting is right after that. Just did this the other day!

Why Google? Why write to the forum? You do have the Help Files behind one click right there in the toolbar?

Select the area, choose "delete special" from the menu, and make sure "delete hole" is checked.
There has to be some data in the section being deleted, so if it is entirely blank you may need to add a MIDI note or some such for it to work.

Squo, If I'm understanding you correctly, you want to delete measures from the beginning of your song? This is what I do: Highlite all tracks. Cut at the point you want as the new start of your song. With all the tracks still highlited, delete the clips at the beginning of the song. Then, with all tracks still highlited, drag them all the way to the left. It helps to have snap to grid set to a higher value, ie whole or 1/2 measure. There may be an easier way, but this has worked for me.

I lasso my mouse around the section while pressing the left click mouse button and press delete. But first I enable audio snap to a setting that is acceptable to that to where i want to cut it. CJ

Thanks for all the help all. I got it working by selecting all tracks then highlighting the 3 measure section at the top of the time ruler, then opening edit, cut special, and clicking delete hole... and voila. The problem was that there was no notes or midi in the space, once I put in some sound into the space it worked... so thanks for that suggestion JB. P.S. Kalle, I know it's hard to resist mocking those on the forum who appear naive, but some of us are smarter than we seem, the explanation in sonar help does not seem to apply to blank spaces... i.e. its too vague... so I asked the forum and I got great answers... well, except for yours. Cheers

This method only moves the clips but not the markers or track automation.

yes, noticed my track automation got screwed up. I'm guessing there may be a setting to keep the automation and markers like when you cut and paste a clip.

I think delete special also works best. I could be wrong but deleting by lasso, doesn't always mean deleting automation either.

Thanks Vast, yes, I see reference to inserting time/measures with options to keep events, markers, key/time changes in tact (I assume events includes automation). I'm guessing it works the same for deleting time/measures although it does not have any reference to that in the help file. Not in my studio so can't try it out, will do so later.

Hey guys, an extension of my last question... I have about a minute of empty space at the end of my song. I have tried highlighting after the end of the song and deleting, delete hole, etc, etc bot can;t seem to cut that space. I don't see any effects or automation or anything in the space. For fun I tried to highlight as far as I could after the end of the song, but my timeline seems to go on forever. I seek your advice oh wise and noble musicians of the internet.

Don't worry about it, specify a time range when exporting.

There must be something out there to fool Sonar into thinknig the song is longer than it is. Things to check for: - Automation nodes
- Markers
- Tempo Changes
- Meter/Key changes
- Hidden tracks/busses
- Bus automation
There might be others, but these are the obvious ones

You can also try the "Fit To Time" function. This also only works when there is data in a track. PROCESS> Fit To TIme Make sure you check the "Use Tempo" Box and you will have to re-input your original desired tempo at the start of the song . There might be an issue with audio clips getting out of sync so you might have to lock em all up in place. I use this all the time when scoring to picture, but most of the time I'm just dealing with midi data. It works best with small amounts of time cuts, but should keep all your automation in place.

scook... how do I specify a time range when exporting ? Don't see that option in either of the 2 popup windows that come up when I export (i.e. to select the file format, bit rate, etc.)

It is not an export option, you need to specify the time range as part of the selection criteria before executing the export option. There are various methods just covered in this thread http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3005788

Thanks scook. I tried that a while back and it did not trim the time range. But just tried it again and now seems to be working. Problem solved. Thanks again.
