Hi, Never thought of many bands as something that "you need to get", because most of it was so far underneath the world of literature I was born around, and actually appreciated, when so many folks don't. A lot of the "hippy" thing in the 60's I even said was stupid, like half the social scene and specially the flower power stuff that was mostly an excuse to get laid, and not have to feel guilty about it, as if the guiltless sex was more enjoyable than putting up with the relationship you are on! I find that "abusive" and I believe it was one of the things that corrupted it all, in the first place, and diluted the important stuff into the gutter and trash. I already knew pop music was just pop music, and most of it was not worth the discussion. But I also SAW, that there were many bands that were trying hard to break out of that mold, and become serious musicians, and this is where the "progressive" music went for the most part, something that many folks think its indulgent, but you don't say that about Jon McLoughlin and Miles Davis, or Igor Stravinsky! There are, for me, no bands that I didn't "get", because there was nothing to get. What am I gonna buy the Rolling Stones for? To stew my tongue on brown sugar? Plllllleeeezzzzz! I have a high respect for some bands, like The Doors, Amon Duul 2, and Banco del Mutturo Soccorso, because in the end, what they did was far more literary, than it was "a song", but if you don't know the difference, it won't matter. You can't compare or do a paper on pulp crap fiction against a lot of The Doors lyrics, but you can certainly write a very good paper on some esoteric, mystic and psychedelic books, that a lot of those pieces of music that scare the living sheet of most folks, because of their words. Hell, all the best pieces of literature you EVER read had words that did the same thing to you, if not a story that threw you under the bus! See the movie "The Trip" about Ken Kesey. It is a documentary, more than anything else, but towards the end, in the last 15 minutes, when he is evaluating the whole trip, there is a set of words that is really important ... that some folks will intentionally ignore, for whatever reason! It says it all about "music", "literature", "art" that you, I, or others did not "get". And worse, like Andy Warhol, sometimes there was nothing to get, and that's the part that makes it harder for you or I to figure things out. And this is where an unsuspecting "audience" gets taken advantage of! BADLY!

Are you trying to make your comments more "got", than liked? Kinda boring, if you ask me. For me, it's not about "like". Never was. It's really hard for me to like something and not understand it or get it! Like you being foolish, instead of having sense and reading a thing or two. That's OK, if you don't have a whole lot to say, when all you can say is that Pedro is doing his thing again! Run out of ideas there? You need to go eat some Becan!

All I meant was that although Stevie Wonder is undoubtedly extremely successful both as an artist and a songwriter, I don't 'get' it. I don't understand the appeal if you will. What is so hard to grasp here that you have to write me a feckin' essay to try and make me look like a prick? And while I've got your attention, how come you never responded to the reply I gave you concerning the possibility of my sourcing some albums (Goons etc) over here for you?

dmbaer While I think I respect what he was trying to do, I just was never moved in the slightest by Van Morrison's music. I once had some friends who really liked him, and I heard quite a bit (this was like 40 years ago, by the way). Just never got it.
Me neither! I always found his music tremendously boring. Great voice, but his songs are just way too similar for comfort. He sings the same bland pentatonic melody over and over. I think the only one I ever rated was "Linden Arden Stole The Highlights." Can't believe nobody's mentioned Oasis, a band whose awfulness was in direct proportion with their egos. EDIT: guess I should have read further into the thread.

There was a bit in a Mystery Science Theater episode wherein some Godzilla-like monster was swimming to London to trash up the place. Tom Servo commented: "Well maybe while he's there he can get rid of Oasis" ... or something to that effect.

jbow Dave Matthews Band. UGH...
Can't stand them- and their audience. I disliked Rush for the last 30 years, immensely - I did try to like them when I first heard them, but I gave up after a while. I've always respected them though, I appreciated their talent, I knew some of that stuff was brilliant but I couldn't stand their music. But I guess things are changing - I bought 2112 Friday and I must have listened to it at least a dozen times since. I ended up grabbing Moving Pictures as well and I'll most likely be ordering a bunch more on Amazon. :/

Karyn Bordering on the shameful pleasures list... I like Pink, but I'd never buy any albums. I don't "get" that style of dancy girly pop, but having seen her live act on TV (proper live, not studio) I do admire her singing talent. She has a good voice and could go far..
First is Pink's Funhouse Tour concert video. If it doesn't make you a fan you'll at least appreciate what a monster talent she is. I mean, how many people can sing upside-down? Her Zeppelin and Queen covers alone are worth the price of admission.
Pink, like many of today's female pop singers, is much better than her albums. The best 20 seconds on her last album is when Lily Allen does a guest shot on "True Love". If you see her doing a live performance on TV, she sings well, but her last album is just painful me for me to listen to.

Creed and Nickleback must be popular, since they sell a lot of records, even though everyone claims to hate them. They are kind of like the McDonalds of music. Everyone says "oh I never eat that !@#$", but you see one on every corner. OT - look up Jim Gaffigan's routine on McDonalds. I love the part where he's talking about how you react when you run into your friend at a McD. Sad, I had to google to see if it was Mc or Mac.

Karyn Def Leppard Yeah, I know they were big in their day. but the "real" rock fans saw them as commercial trash. Over the years I've warmed to many bands and musical genres I once hated/avoided/ignored but I still don't get Def Leppard.
I remember when I first heard "Photograph" I laughed because it sounded like an overfluffed overpolished boy band attempt at an AC/DC song.

Old55 I'll start with Fleetwood Mac(the non-blues version). They may be technically brilliant. Stevie Nicks may be a great singer, but her voice gets on my nerves for some reason that I can't explain.
Maybe because it's cloying and somewhat nasal? I feel exactly the same. But I don't mind her in the context of Fleetwood Mac. I do stay far away from here solo stuff, however.
As a solo artist, my feelings on her mirror that of the guys from south park ( http://www.southparkstudios.co.uk/clips/104197/looks-like-were-going-to-afghanistan). But I think she really does a good job as a background vocalist.

I dug Def Leppard - mind you, I was 11 years old when Pyromania came out, and I was merely starting to venture outside of my parents record collection, but it made a solid impression on me. I listened to it again a few months ago, for the first time in over 25 years, and I thought it wasn't all that bad. I still think there are a couple of pretty good songs on that album, albeit pretty pop. But still, decent songs and arrangements. There were also a couple of interesting things on the previous ones. Photograph and Rock of Ages sort of set the standard for what Def Leppard (and most of the artists produced by Mutt Lange) would sound like in the future. Hysteria and the following albums I didn't like. At any rate, as poppy and polished as it is, when I compare Pyromania to current pop music, it puts things into perpective a bit.

I liked a few songs off their first album too. "Let it Rock" was one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. I just didn't like the direction Mutt Lange took them in.
