Streaming SONAR output in real(ish)time over LAN to remote-desktop PC?
A similar question was asked recently but my requirements are a bit different, so I thought it should be a new post:
I have my big fancy schmancy DAW in the basement with gobs of RAM and gigs of sample libraries and VSTs.
Upstairs I have my tiny little Windows 8 netbook which I use for everyday computing tasks.
I'd love to be able to harness the power of my DAW from the comfort of my couch -- not for recording live audio or MIDI, just for some point-and-click editing in track view and piano roll view. (Although it would be nice to do some simple MIDI recording remotely from a small keyboard controller).
I assume I'll need the following:
1. Remote desktop software (e.g. VNC, Teamviewer, etc.) -- I've got this part covered, though I'd welcome recommendations for which might be the most efficient for my purposes.
2. Some software/driver to stream SONAR's master output over LAN to my netbook's sound card output? I assume that I'll need some kind of streaming audio driver designed for this purpose, and use this driver as SONAR's primary out on my DAW? But if there's any way to stream the output directly from my DAW's Presonus Audiobox driver I'd prefer this option. (So that when I switch from remote-control to working directly at my basement DAW, I don't have to deal with swapping output drivers and any potential nightmares re: driver types, sample rates, buffer sizes, etc. that may come with this switching).
Latency isn't a huge issue since I don't plan to record audio or MIDI live, but I'd like the transport controls, scrubbing, PRV mouse-clicks, level meters, etc. to be as responsive and immediate as can be reasonably expected.
CURRENTLY I only need to do this within my house on a local network, but bonus points for a solution that would allow me to do the same over the interwebs!
Does anyone have experience with this? I'd love to hear tips on the best possible setup (particularly with regards to part 2 above).
Thanks,
chris
