Working with Dimension LE

I've had SONAR X1 Studio for 3-4 years but I've never used Dimension LE. I just bought SONAR X3 Pro but I'm waiting for a new computer to install it. In the meantime I want to start learning how to use it  in my X1 Studio. I've added tracks 2 ways: as a simple instrument track and as a MIDI source track. So how do I get something going in the MIDI track.

Thanks,
John

When using a MIDI source make sure to also check one of the audio track options in the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog. Generally with DimPro the "First Synth Audio Output" is sufficient. It is also possible to add the audio track after inserting the synth then select the synth as the audio track input.

Thanks for that very important piece of info! I've gotten far enough to playback a sample midi track, but have encountered two problems: 1) It skips notes randomly and 2) I can't figure out where to put the Gibson 5-string bass programs so that they come up on the drop down menu. Part of the problem may be that I'm still working in X1 Studio, I don't know. But the most important thing for me starting to learn how to use it is how to fix the inconsistent note dropouts.

    Any thought?

    Thanks,
    John

    1) try increasing "Prepare Using nnn Millisecond Buffers" in Preferences > MIDI > Playback and Recording from 250 to 500 or 750.
    2) There are instructions in the Gibson-EB5-TCTN_TCTB-Bass.zip file called CAGibsonEB5InstallationInstructions.rtf providing detailed instructions on how to install the files. After installing the files make sure to refresh the DimPro LE program browser by pressing F5.

I haven't been able to install the Gibson EB5 Bass because the folder structure required by the instructions doersn't exist. Here's what the instructions say:
    Programs
To load the programs for this expansion pack into Dimension Pro/LE first extract the contents of the “03 - Real Basses” .zip file by right-clicking on the file and selecting “Extract All”. Extract the content to the following location:
    Dimension Pro: C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension Pro\Programs\03 - Real Basses
    Dimension LE (x86): C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Dimension LE\Programs\03 - Real Basses

The folder structures I have are:
    C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension LE\Programs\03 - Real Basses   AND
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Studio Instruments   OR   C:\Program Files (x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins

The first folder has the bass programs that appear in SONAR but I tried to extract to that folder it wouldn't do it. So I manually pasted the Gibson programs in alongside the ones I can see but they don't show up in SONAR.

Any thoughts on how I can work around this?

    Thanks,
    John

Did you follow the rest of #4 above?
After installing the files make sure to refresh the DimPro LE program browser by pressing F5.

IOW, open DimPro LE, then open the DimPro LE program browser and press the F5 key. This will scan C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Dimension LE\Programs and rebuild the program list.

Since you've now got X3 Pro, you might as well install Dimension Pro and ignore LE.

I would install X3 Pro now except that my current computer runs on Vista which, I believe, is not compatible with X3. I'm doing a lot of research and taking my time before getting the new computer but I do want to learn as much as I can about Dimension in the meantime.

scook, this may sound stupid, but how do I "open" Dim Pro LE? Remember, I'm still working with X1 Studio. In the Insert>Soft Synth menu it's called "Dimension LE ((xl64) Dimension LE)"

    Feeling clueless :- )

X3 while not supported will run on Vista. There were even updates to the VST scanner made for Vista. If it were my machine, I would install X3 Producer on it.

Yes, the process you described to insert the synth will do.

Before you install dim pro, you might want to uninstall dim le first.
Several years ago I had dim le installed first. Then when I installed dim pro the vst scan would only recognize dim le and dim pro was no where to be found. I guess the 2 dim has the same vst name so the scan would have to choose one of them.

You don't need to install Sonar X3.  Dimension Pro is on separate disks (or separate download files, whichever) and it will run on Vista.

I've had them both installed together without any issues.

I was curious about the DP LE versus DP as well. I never "uninstalled" LE, and think is was replaced by DP (full version). It has been so long now that I forget the mechanics behind that one.

They are different plug-ins which can co-exist. It was common years ago to use LE to save on resources even when the full version was installed

Thanks for the clarification. I honestly cannot remember what I did, but I must have checked an uninstall someplace.

Also note DimPro and DimLE each use a different filepath for the multisamples, so you end up with 2 sets of multisamples.

Thank you all. So am I correct that if download my SONAR X-1 I can uninstall just the Dimension LE? I think that might be the best way to go if that's true.

There's no need to uninstall anything.  Just install Dimension Pro.

By the way I'm confused when you say "download my SONAR X-1".
