Wildflower Days
I haven't posted anything here in a long time. I almost always repay crits and look forward to hearing your stuff. This is actually my 1st full song done in X3 and I'm really liking the changes. I'm for sure going to have another go at mixing this so any help in that regard is appreciated. I doubt I'll change the basic song, but I'm always happy to hear what doesn't work for you. Any help appreciated. Thanks guys. Wildflower Days V1 I woke up in Memphis On a fast freight train Rode it to Paris Got off in the rain V2 Went inside a diner Ordered coffee and pie Sat down in a corner Until my clothes were dry Chorus Texas couldn't hold me So I moved on to Santa Fe Then headed back to Colorado For wildflower days V3 Once I had a woman's love But I let her slip away Wandering fits me like a glove Mine is a world of gray Chorus Texas couldn't hold me So I moved on to Santa Fe Then headed back to Colorado For wildflower days Copyright 2014 Nathan A. Very nice tune. Vocals are buried in the mix. if I turn up the volume there's way to much bass. Flute is nice but should have a rest sometimes, imho. Would be nice to have some acoustic guitar for a bit of sparkle and rhythmic interest. Rik

Great song - I'll have another listen to the mix later - I only have crappy speakers here.

Well, to me the vocal was not buried, maybe be a bit louder for that, but I think the song is kind of sad. Sounded okay to me.

Rikkie, Daryl and Spaceelf, Thanks for the help guys. I'm gonna work on both the vocal and flute in the remix. Right now I'm leaning towards replacing the flute choir in the chorus w/ OOs... hopefully some female OOs but I'm working on that. Thanks for checking out the tune.

Nice clean and clear sound on the instrumentation. The vocals are quite low in the beginning and then come in a lot more clear as the song progresses, but still have a few uneven lowers here and there. This is why I don't try singing very often. But, overall, not a bad song at all, just a hard one to sing to. Nicely done though. Peace and Blessings, John

Nice tune Ian. Thanks. I've had 'wildflower days' myself. It was a bar though:) Also, did some Colorado-ing. So, all in all, kind of nostalgic..

Something about the mix seems off to me. I cannot pinpoint it. The opening lead instrument (floot?) seems to overpowering. Voice feels a tad to dry and low in the mix to me. Drums sound good. Piano at ~2:05 is too loud. Listening on Sennheiser HD600s.

Nice song, kind of dark. I like the mix all but the vocals, which are a bit low in the mix.

I like the song overall - on my laptop speakers the "flute" is a bit overpowering and the vocal sounds a bit low in the mix. Some nice chord changes in there too :-D Cheers, Terry.

Hey Ian - I totally dig this tune! the arrangement, flute, dark feel...I loved it! The vox are mixed a bit low. For some reason, I can totally imagine putting a slightly distorted megaphone or telephone type effect on the vocals for this song.

I enjoyed the musical end of things you used a very nice arrangement and instrumentation through out the whole song . The Vox didn't jive w me …...fwiw….I'm a non vocalist by choice and I can't offer much on that end of things anyway Kenny

Hi Ian . . . I listened to your tune 5 times, and the thing that stayed with me from the first listen is that I didn't like the way the vocal "hook" . . . wild - - flower - - - days . . . is drawn out and elongated in the first two choruses, yet it works well in the final chorus. I think from a songwriting point of view your tune could be stronger and "catchier" if you can improve that part of it. That said . . . I really like this song and feel the vocal delivery of the lyric is quite strong. Your voice has a great quality in the lower register that works particularly well in this arrangement. Wouldn't change a lot about the mix, except like others have stated, more room + less dry on the vocal. (While on your Soundclick page I've listened to your other songs and must say "I'm Missing Her" is a great and well written pop song, which I relate very strongly to, thanks for that.)

I like that song a LOT!! And your voice is killer!! It's very different and immediately got my attention. Sort of reminded me of Lou Reed without the angst. If I were to change anything in the arrangement it would be to make the keyboard a little darker (it seems fairly bright and happy), since the sing itself is somewhat dark. But that's only a niggle, and overall you have a really good song here. I hope you have great success with your music.

I too am a vocal person and thought your voice sounds unique, and I liked it a lot. Just for something a little left of centre, you could ditch the drums and rhythmic feel, and give it a really lost and dark feel with just some acoustic guitar and that voice. Just sayin'. Did I mention I like your voice.

Thanks much for the great feedback. There's a female vocalist who's graciously going to sing OOs in the chorus, replacing the flute choir. I'll also redo the flute in the chorus and repost in probably, a couple of weeks. I'll re-read everyone's mixing advice before I remix. I really appreciate the mixing help. I'm not commenting on the mixing comments below, but I WILL be reviewing them all before I remix. They're pretty invaluable really. Thanks SOOO much. rebel1007 and jude77- Thanks so much. Especially for the vocal comments. I've never considered myself a vocalist, but I work on it. Something must be paying off thegaltieribrothers - Thanks! You guys are good songwriters. noynekker - Thanks also for the vocal comments. Really appreciated. "I'm Missing Her" is actually the most popular tune I've ever done. It was #1 in it's subcategory on soundclick for something like 6 months. I've never had that kind of response to any other tune. Kenny - Thanks. I really worked on the arrangement. Appreciate the nod... Re. my voc., I've often self described it as 'an acquired taste that not so many have acquired'. This tune actually has the most positive comments about my voc that I've ever received, but I'm absolutely not offended and appreciate knowing it didn't work for you. phill - Thanks! Mike - Thanks also... the megaphone is an interesting idea. I'll at least do a trial mix w/ that. Terry - Thanks and thanks for the chord comment. How many tunes have a GbMaj7(flat5)? StringJammer - Thanks much. I always value your input! bapu - My first review from the legendary bapu! - Thanks for the great specific advice which I'll review after the re-do. Man I wish I had your treasure trove of studio goodies! timidi - Thanks much... I've personally never spent time in Colorado, but I live next to the Sierras and they have incredible wildflowers in the spring too. John - Blessings to you also! That's an interesting comment about the melody. It's actually a composed melody to the specific chord voicing and bass line. I'm gonna think if there's something that might improve it. Thanks! I'm a Christian also. I don't post much Chrisitan music but if you're interested there's some stuff here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=959751 -- Your piece sounds very pro to me!

Not sure your vocals worked on this Ian. And I would use a different piano (personally) not a fan of that either. I may have gone more with a Rhodes sound. I like "the feel" of your song. The steady parts in the winds in the background I felt could breath a bit more. Like at the end, it was perfect, but in other parts, it seems like it needed to fade in and out/be more sparse. I realize these are mostly production crits? But I try to keep it real. Again, I do like your tune.
