installing sonar over a wifi network?
I am looking to install X3 onto my Surface Pro - but as there is limited power available to the USB port (ie my backup USB hard drive will not run because of lack of power), I was wondering if it is possible to install it over the wifi network - I know it will be slow, but perhaps not as slow as manually transferring the install files then installing?

What about a thumb drive? A 16GB drive is about $10 and much larger than needed.

Yeah I thought of that Scook, but I have plenty on hand that are 4gig . .and one 32gig one that holds my W8 Surface OS backup - I removed the partition for extra space. So I am a little loathe to use it, lest it corrupts the OS data. You may be right, might be just easier to go to the store and buy another 16 gig drive - although out here they are not $10 LOL, by the time I go to the store at 9am (it is 6.40am at the moment) and get home and copy X3 and then install, it would probably STILL be installing over wifi!

If you do go the flash drive route, unpack the download files using 7-Zip and copy the files onto the drive. This should make the install go faster by skipping the unpacking on the target machine.

You should not have any problems. My laptop is connected via WIFI and i didn't have any issues. but i guess it depends on how fast the connection is CJ

I used to use wifi to get to my studio computer. It was dreadfully slow. I went out and got me a long CAT 5 cable and hardwired it. It was heaven.

Great tip, thanks Scook. Thanks others for your thoughts. The Surface does not have a LAN port so via LAN is not possible

Its a pretty standard wi-fi Cjay - and the Surface is about 4 feet away from it..I did a test run of the first install file, and it took forever to even display the X3 user data screen (serial number, name etc etc), so I gave it up as a bad joke!

Will X3 run on a Surface Pro? I am guessing you would need a Dock to have enough ports for an external hard drive and an audio interface, and also I would think the 8 GB of memory would be the better choice - if it can even run X3. Bob Bone

4 gig is fine (after all, X3 runs in 32bit when there is a MAX of 4 gig ram not only for X3 but for the system as well). I guess there would be limitations on how many vst's can be run concurrently, but that problem also exists on a full desktop daw running 32 bit as well. So yeah, I think 4 gig is fine. I use a small unpowered dock and it runs a mouse, the ASIO USB driver (to a mixer) a program that onyl runs from a thumbdrive (copy protection reasons) and a Roland UM-1SX USB midi interface - all sweet as. It is a USB 3 port (genuine) so I imagine that is why it all runs so smoothly. There is just not enough oomph in it to run a USB Hard drive

1. Do you have an audio interface to hook into it? 2. Would a USB hard drive work if the external drive had it own power, rather than relying on the USB port? A curious Bob Bone

I believe Surface Pro(s) are Intel based where as the Surface RT(s) had the ARM chip in them. Regards,

Hey Bob, as I wrote I already have the audio I/F connected I have no doubt an external USB drive would be fine if it had it's own power supply. Much the same as using a powered USB hub. @ mmorgan - quite correct RT's are 100% no good for anything other than playing back music files.
