Hot Fix [not needed anymore] Now please!
I have yet to open a project since X3e without it crashing. Some I can't even open, "Runtime error." Now to figure out how to uninstall X3e...

Please list your computer specs, look at my signature info at the bottom of this post for an example. We can likely help get this fixed up for you, but need to know what kind of system, and additional info, to know how to best give you the steps you need to resolve your issues. 1. What OS? 2. 32 bit? 64-bit? 3. CPU? 4. Audio interface present, or using on-board sound chip? If present, what is exact model and what exact driver version is it using? In addition, what Sample Rate is it using? 5. What Sample Rate is set for Sonar? 7. Is your Windows version up to date on maintenance? 8. Are there errors listed in the Windows Event Viewer? 9. What exact error messages are you getting when it crashes? 10. Dumps created? Sorry for all the questions, but we need to have an idea of your setup, as well as the other requested information. Please review and respond with ALL the requested information, and I will do my best to assist. Bob Bone

Now to figure out how to uninstall X3e... Simple, Perform a system restore. Hopefully you made restore points before the upgrade. What does your crash report say? Every crash has a report generated. This is uselfull info you need to state in your post. I pretty sure its not an X3e as everyone would be seeing it ot at least most users would be having crashed, but that is not the case. A hot-fix will not fix your problem. Its prob coincidence (thank god for spell check) and its something else that is causing the crash. CJ

What everybody else says. This is the first time anybody has reported this sort of behaviour with X3E in these forums, obviously system specific, so I can't see how a hot fix would help. Thanks...

Ok, thank you all for your help. It seems to be working now, at least on the one project I'm mixing. But here are the best I could do with the questions:
1. What OS? W8.1
2. 32 bit? 64-bit? 64
3. CPU? Intel i7-3930K 3.2Ghz (overclocked by ADK to 4.5 Ghz)
4. Audio interface present, or using on-board sound chip? If present, what is exact model and what exact driver version is it using? In addition, what Sample Rate is it using? Lynx Aurora 16 PCIe
5. What Sample Rate is set for Sonar? 44.1
7. Is your Windows version up to date on maintenance? Yes, but I'll check - correction, one "Important Update" available. Will install.
8. Are there errors listed in the Windows Event Viewer? Yes, not sure exactly where to look, but for today there are 16 errors and two warnings under Administrative Events(!) Many appear to be related to Waves (plugin - GTR 3.5, VSTi - element). Maybe look for Waves update(?)
9. What exact error messages are you getting when it crashes? Usually just freezes, but with one particular project I get "Runtime Error! This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."
10. Dumps created? I don't know - the dump created message doesn't come up. Can't remember where to look for them I installed as Administrator ("Run as Administrator"), which I do for all apps. Should I not be? I don't have an anti-virus software

Also verify the MD5 hash of the file you downloaded matches the one posted on the download page. A system restore point prior to the patch will restore the application to X3d, but the issue in the OP sounds a lot like a corrupt download or improper installation.

@Treefight, I am a little confused. I went to the web site for your audio interface company, and their product versions don't quite seem to match your posted 'Lynx Aurora 16 PCIe'. Here is the company's web site link: http://www.lynxstudio.com/index.asp I am asking about this because I wanted to see what their latest driver version is, and also I wanted to see if there is any firmware updates available. Soooo, please find the product that exactly matches your interface, as I didn't find a ''Lynx Aurora 16 PCIe', and locate the most current driver release for your interface, and see if it matches what is on your computer already. While you are there, look to see if there are also any firmware updates (have to be careful with these, but if one is out there, it may include a description of what changes are in it). Thanks, I see you have a Sonar Sample Rate of 44.1 k, but you didn't list one for the interface. It should exactly match the sample rate setting in Sonar, but I want to make sure that yours do match. And, for the projects that are failing, are there any third-party 32-bit plugins loaded into any of them? If so, please list which 32-bit plugins are loaded. Bob Bone

Bob, the Lynx pcie 16 is the pcie card - but it should have drivers. It delivers AES or ADAT (with an ADAT daughter card) digital info to the computer. The converters are separate. @

OK - if this is the correct device, there is a drivers update from Feb of this year, as well as a firmware update from Feb of this year. The release notes for the firmware update mention 44.1 k support. Here is the link to the page with both updates (drivers and firmware) - please make sure they are for YOUR exact audio interface. http://www.lynxstudio.com/support_downloads_results.asp?prod=16&type=0 Bob Bone

@AT thanks - although I was not sure about the precise device, I did provide the link to the vendor's web site, and the OP had not provided the driver/firmware information that I had asked for earlier, so that was why I had urged him to remain engaged in the thread. And, though I had asked for both, the OP had also not indicated what the sample rate for the audio interface was - he did supply the sample rate for Sonar, but one way to crash Sonar (and/or have other weird things happen) is to have a mismatch between the sample rates of the audio interface and Sonar. You are seriously over-clocking your cpu, and I would consider running X3 at normal speed to see if it becomes more stable. I have encountered problems trying to run big complex software with over-clocking engaged. X3e is a stable release. so the problem is likely with your system...

Everyone, Thanks for all of the helpful information. Apologies for not getting back sooner. Unfortunately, real life beckons sometimes (I wish music production was my "real life"). So, I did spend most of the day Saturday tracking, and some mixing yesterday, without a hiccup. New projects seem fine. Old projects (like a year or more old) pull up fine as well. I'm starting to think it's related to a new VSTi, EZKeys, which I had recently installed and used on a project, and that's the project that gives me the runtime error, which has turned into the only source of crashes in the past couple of days. I'm going to see if I can duplicate the error with a new project with EZKeys in it and, if so, reinstall it, take the usual measures, but X3 seems ok for now, I think. So I probably owe Cake an apology. I did just update the Lynx drivers and firmware, I believe earlier this month, but I'll double check. Yes, the Lynx and Sonar sample rates match. The Lynx will occasionally want to run at 48, in which case I can't do anything until I go into the Lynx software and change it back to 44.1. As for overclocking, my instincts told me it could be the problem, except that it hasn't posed any problems in the past and my friends at ADK informed me that it was absolutely fine in my setup - in fact they did the overclocking. This was not always the case - only a couple of years ago they strongly recommended against overclocking. So things/technology changes, I guess. I do get into some pretty low buffers recording, which is cool, i.e., 64 is no problem, 32 ever works most of the time. And no 32-bit plugs in use on that project. Overall, very weird. Spirits in the machine. You know how sometimes you have a day of issues, and then they seem to disappear? No? Maybe it's just me... In other news, before all this, I had switched to this machine as my main DAW, so installed a new video card, two UAD Quad cards, and a TI chipset FW card. Of course, most of my music software thought this was a new install, and I had to go and re-authorize most of my plugs and synths and/or re-install them (missing presets, for example). Even X3 was affected, as my custom plugin menu was nowhere to be found, the one I spent hours putting together. Oh well, re-doing it gave me an opportunity to look at all of the expensive plugins I never use, LOL. As my wife says, do you really NEED more? Well, it's just a new version... and I don't really NEED it... but... Thanks again, especially Mr. Bone, for your detailed assistance.

Treefight So I probably owe Cake an apology.
Very nice. SONAR tends to be everyone's whipping boy, but few are classy enough to follow up with the OP like this. FWIW, overclocking is something you may want to revisit at some point. The thermal issues caused by that are not instantaneous and cause degradation over time. Especially this day in age, there are very few things that will tax a CPU (to 100%), and is usually for shorter durations, so the thermal spikes are not persistent (video processing and encryption algorithms are two big ones that will). Most of the CPU's life is spent at low CPU load, so placing a higher voltage on it is not increasing its life expectancy (or adding benefit).
