Words & Music by Daren Thomas Turner

you keep me oiled up in jars
you take me out when you are bored
i am a baby in your arms
i am a victim of your love

two hours and 69 dirty minutes
i will eat your twerk and lick your dirty dishes
Pac-man-power-pill and cherry push ups
(Come again?) Did I really hear ya say [what?]

two hundred and 69 sic positions
you got your toys out, cams on, video-n'
are you showing all my other homies what'cha got?
while makin' phat stacks and listenin' to hip hop

you have the key to all my locks
you know just how i come undone
i am your sacrificial lamb
my body dies after i come

I like the mix - tho it is different.  Buried vocals - they probably need to be punched up a few dBs in a few places.  Same w/ the lead guitar in the break.  Draw a little more attention to themselves via volume.  Not too much or you'll break the spell.  Despite not having a "dominate" instrument everything is pretty separated.  Hard trick to pull off.

The snare is probably a little loud.  Love it, but it does stick out probably more than necessary.  It sounds like a case of a small goldilocks region where it either predominates or disappears - I've noticed that in my stuff.

Good song well done.  You probably need to read some comments, let it stew for a week or so w/o working on it, and then come back (disregarding all our comments ;-) you seem to know what you like).

I dug it. It is really different in regards to what is usually on the songs forum. The only nit I had was what I believe to be the rhythm guitar, where it does this drone sound between 1:10 and 1:34 and does it again later. Not that I dislike that drone sound, I just thought where it was used it needed to be shorter in length, because I found it distracting from what I was wanting to listen to. But it may indeed be exactly where you want it. Just my observation. But I really liked the song.

Edited so I could add times.

hey both of you guys really rock! I very much appreciate the feedback as I agree on many points - I took the snare down a tad, boosted vox a bit, and the drone sound ( kinda stolen from Zep 'in the light') wasnt compressed enough and the grumbling in subs distracted me -
I made adjustments as per - also the rest of guitar solos mixed in: http://mediumrangeintelligence.com/cec_m2.mp3

still need to make more edits but it's coming along. thanks agsin :) - Daren

Cool tune. One thing that I'd say, when listening it to the first time is that the drums seem to be the main focus. A bit of automation on the vox in places, some of the words are buried at the moment. At 2.43 on the left solo there seems to be a bit of noise on top of the distortion, Is it peaking at this point?
    Good work thou.

Hi Daren, are you sure it's loud enough ; ) I can't make out the lyrics, up the vox a bit. Guitars sound nice but also a bit low, where the drums stop in the beginning they could come up a bit imho.

As others have pointed out the vocals are a bit buried, good rock groove though.

This is signature Daren and put together like no other...I know what you mean about burning ones ears out on a mix. I gotta hand it to you for being able to put all of that together...from what I remember you use a lot of tracks in your songs.Putting mulitiple guitars together in a dense mix is always a challenge. It sounds a lot like your other music in terms of the mix and I have always liked the mysterious quality of your songs. I don't see anything sticking out in this that would make me say something needs to be a lot different. If you're not finished with it yet I would love to hear the final version. The music itself grabs me more than the mix.

The bass could use a little more punch on the bottom end (maybe 100Hz) and some top end to give it some presence.

    Drums sound right on.

Darren, I know you like your vocals buried so I'll not ask you to raise them

I wonder what would happen if you gave the guitars a boost on the top (> 2K)?

For reference I'm listening on my Sennheiser HD600s so may they are dull and I just spent an hour mixing.

Bapu- on that note: are you 1) referring to shred-noize guitar solo over the 'Iron-Maiden-esque' descending harmonies, 2) the Joe Perry-ish ghost bends in outro, 3) or main guitar riff entire song is written around -- ?

    thanks again - Daren :)

Daren, we've talked about the buried vocals for years now.  It's your style and what you like .  I actually understood these better than usual.  Maybe because I was reading the lyrics at the same time.  Might I say that the lyrics are strange!  LOL  You are a rocker of a different color, buddy!

Who writes lyrics like that anymore?  That was more than erotic, that was sensual.  I've gotten used to you keeping your vocals low in the mix, but I never get tired of your clever arrangements and fabulous performances.  If only there was a Brian Epstein out there for you (sigh...).  I always appreciate the way you take chances and blow us away.

Awesome tune Daren! Really enjoyed it.

Very busy mix, but I think you kept everything under control. All of the guitars, except the one Bapu mentioned, really seemed to share the same frequencies, so it was a little difficult to hear just how much is going on. They could use a bit more separation, and maybe EQ tweaks just to separate them better.

    Sick... in a good way.

The lyrics remind me (a lot) of something a musician buddy from years ago would have written.  Eerie...   Definitely like the song, it's got a different vibe for sure.   Mix-wise it sounds a bit centered in the mids, but I only listened to the link in the OP.    Either way, I was still entertained the whole way.

    Sick... in a good way.

The lyrics remind me (a lot) of something a musician buddy from years ago would have written.  Eerie...   Definitely like the song, it's got a different vibe for sure.   Mix-wise it sounds a bit centered in the mids, but I only listened to the link in the OP.    Either way, I was still entertained the whole way.

hey thanks - i actually agreed about the mix(es) - the final version i panned the rhythm guitars right and dialed them in around the rest- opening up middle for main riff and drums to have more presence and air - think that helped a lot - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=law8n7t_CS8
