Ain't Got No - New mix updated.
http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=12782247&q=hi&newref=1 Note May 6 2014: Took advice from this thread and upped the vocals and lowered the reverb a notch. I also switched to sound click, Sound cloud wouldn't let me update the song or edit song order. Wrote this about 2 years ago. Original version was live, just me and guitar. which I perform live. I don't normally finger pick so this is a bit different than most of my stuff. We are working on a acoustic album featuring my originals and my partner Curt playing Banjo. This is the first off the assembly line, mostly because I'm going through the songs alphabetically. Tech details; done on Sonar 8.5 and my Tascam interface. Acoustic guitar and mixed with x3 studio and Scarlett 6i6. Mr Tramp my favorite keyboard is featured. Only MIDI sound. Curt on Banjo I play all the rest including a real snare drum with brushes ( can't do it with samples) Only Lexicon Rev, no other plug ins. Mastered in Goldwave I am away from studio so mixdown done on headphones... so if bass is too loud will fix later.

Sounds good. On these little-bitty computer speakers the bass sounded good - and they will usually tell if there is an unsightly bloom down there as long as it ain't too low down there. Very tasteful, esp. the banjo (easy to overdue). Love the extended metaphor. Very nice arrangement and production - plenty of depth and space. @

And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Thanks. I was thinking the mix would be close as I had already set the song to mixdown mode before I left home. It's a whole album project and we have 24 songs. I will narrow that down to 14- 16 . I am re doing some guitar tracks while staying at in laws. Mother in law 84, is very ill cancer, so we are trying to be with her as much as possible. I've taken over their nice new HP desktop in the spare bedroom. A small road case, my A&L folk and my Yamaha bass and a SM 57. I do need some small monitors but not working much this month. So I only have headphones. I have to take a break every hour as I find headphones tire me out. Might get 2 more done today and will post. I really appreciate feedback. Be honest, I can take it. It will have to make it past the wife anyhow and she is brutal!

Would love to hear your voice up front with a bit more in-your-face compression. Pining for a kick, personally (or some kick-like percussion on the 1's). Great tune though! Keep it rollin', dude! :-)

Hi john, fun tune. Vocals could be a bit louder. The acoustic guitar solo is hard to make out, raise it a bit. Rik

Hey thanks, that's why I love this forum. Like I said I'm on headphones right now which is only one of five ways I normally critique. I use compression going in via my Yamaha 01v on all my vocals and bass parts. This song does not involve any "power" in my voice, more of a late night smokey blues style. But I will bring it up a few Db, The solos are understated on purpose but ya, need a little more I guess. We have played this live for over a year and I've done better. I am finger picking so it's not a technique I'm good at, I'll just re play it. After 12 takes I think I figured this is as good as it gets..:) Yes there is no Kick drum. I have a kick track and it actually sounded better to me with it right off. I opted for as little midi as possible on this one. I have been making rough mixes of the songs from the album and have about 6 or more posted now. What's the best way to present them here? Should I post a thread for each song or the whole batch? I'll try the whole batch thread approach I guess. The link I guess is always in my signature anyway. Soundcloud.

Really well done. Seems muddy? I agree you made the banjo fit well. (Not my fav instrument) I agree the vox could be closer with more highs?.

Sounds good! If I would change anything it seems to me it could be a touch less reverb to help clear it up a little. It sounds to me like it might be the reverb on the banjo, maybe back off on it and it will smooth it out. Nice tune and a good job on it.

Nice comfortable music. From your intro post I was expecting a lot less. I don't know why. It's nice when you get more than you expect. I feel really comfortable listening to this song. Mix and everything sounds nice. I really enjoyed it.

I was very impressed with how you kept the bottom and mids super tight on your song when I was listening , I turned your song up on a cr&ppy pair of JBL's monitors and it took a lot to get it to distort Yeah, your tune is a breath of fresh air man ….I love acoustic music played on real instruments if you can bump the Vocal up a touch …….you sound great Kenny

Thanks everyone for you great feedback. Sorry I was slow in replying here, I subscribed to the thread but for some reason never got notices in my email. I am working on the whole album so haven't had time to re mix this song as of yet, so it remains unchanged. I did go back in and put an volume envelope on the guitar solo to even it out, I played with my fingers so dynamics where all over the map. It's a bit sloppy too but I has grown on me and fit's the feel perfectly. I was going to make Curt re do the Banjo solo as it's sort of understated but that has grown on me too. We both suffer from arthritis in our hand and playing slow is all your going to get from us from now on. I think I will back off on the reverb a tiny, tiny bit, but it is what I wanted for this song. My other songs on the album have very little effects. I think the Circle Be Unbroken Album is my idea of what acoustic, bluegrass should sound like. Ideally 1 mike in a good room, everybody in a circle sound. I'm not really using top grade equipment here ya know! I'll see if I can do a re mix today and I'll re-upload it to soundcloud and note this fact in the thread title. Thanks ever so much again for you encouragement and feedback.

You got feedback on the mix. I dig the song and that opening guitar hooked me. Looking forward to the remix. p.s. Sounds like that new audio interface is working out for you.

Johnny, thanks for your kind words. I'm just using an ordinary account, the free one. I use it because it's much easier to edit and arrange songs than Soundclick.

I think the quality of the song could be better - the song is very nice but the vocals are a bit muddy - try it with another mic or another setting - that's my 5 cent.

eko, thanks for the feedback, Interesting too, what kind of playback system were you using? The vocals are layed back, yes, but muddy isn't exactly the word I would use, It just sounds like me and my budget studio. I'm not trying to produce a pop song, but if it truley sounds muddy to some people I'm open to looking into a touch of eq. The mike was a AKG ? I forget, numbers are worn off 'cuase it's real old. I certainly don't own anything upscale. I'm a pour man with basic equipment and it's just a hobbie. But part of the hobbie is producing the best sound you can with what you have.

And Lynn yes I think you meant to say easier than using soundcloud. And that's exactly why I returned to soundclick. Soundcloud has no editing options to place your song iin any logical order, just plunks them down as you upload, and then I delete songs to re upload a new mix and it won't let me. I gave up and I'm now enjoying soundclicks easy no hassle system.
