How to use "loops and one shots"

I pretty much only have the stock stuff that came with 8.5.

I purchased a package of .wav files that includes samples, loops and one shots
it has a number of long field recordings that i know i can "import audio" and edit etc.
the loops and one shots though - is there something i have that i would load these into?
i'm not quite sure how to use this stuff just yet :)

Just drag, drop and position where needed.  You can chop them up, run them through FX, make a Groove Clip from them (tempo matched), etc. etc. etc.  You could also make a SoundFont from them, and trigger via MIDI.  Does anyone still do that thought?

Audio is very easy to work with within Sonar. Use the drum one shots to fatten up rhythm tracks, add punch to kick drums/snares, etc.

so i would be doing "import audio" for a single snare beat?  and i guess just copy pasting from there?

i guess sfz is more along the lines of what i had thought i was getting....like i could just play these on the keyboard?

Or load them into a sample player, which would allow you to play them on a keyboard or drive them from a MIDI track. You have at your disposal Sound Font Player, Dimension Pro and Cyclone. Kontakt would be the ultimate sample player but requires a significant investment of both time and money.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

haha yeah kontakt is a bit too much for me at this stage in my learning :)

geez sfz and cyclone i may have opened once ever!

so if i load that single snare hit into one of these players - that's it?
i'll have a midi track that is dedicated to that snare alone?
and if i wanted to put together a full drum track using this sample pack alone....i would have to create many tracks - each with just a single percussive instrument (i.e. track 1 is snare, track 2 bass drum, track 3 ride cymbal etc)

The easiest free solution may be TX16Wx

Session Drummer can also play single samples. One sample per pad. Drag and drop the samples onto the pad or kit piece.

sfz files are not that difficult to create. Look in the Session Drummer Content area for each instrument for examples. Copy one and replace with the samples you want to use.

thanks for that link scook i'll be reading the details on that one when i get a minute

now that i think about it i suppose beatscape would do this too but i would still be limited to a track that contains just the snare or crash cymbal etc.  I'm not sure there is really even a problem with this.  i'm just old school and used to "kits" i believe :)

Usually having the kit pieces broken out into individual audio tracks is a good thing. If it is a problem, route them to a bus (which you would probably do anyway) and bounce it down.

Yea, Beatscape will also work. It can be a little buggy. The plug-in was dropped a few years after it was released.

wow i didn't know that...i thought beatscape was supposed to be the "improved cyclone"!

i see how individual kit pieces make sense - just going to take a little getting used to i guess
buses are like well i haven't used one just yet though a more experienced eye looking at my project would likely say "you should have" lol

buses/sidechaining...that kind of stuff i'm still trying to wrap my head around as i go along

Seems like a lot of work to me...kind of like making your own brushes, before you decide to do a painting.

This seems to be the way it works for me.

I've written a song, laid down a few tracks, then I think. Hmm, a nice ethereal sound would work really well over that transition into the pre chorus, I think there was a nice one that I downloaded only a few weeks ago. I drag and drop it onto a new track, add a few effects, perfect. Then I need to fatten up that tom break in the chorus to make it really stand out. I add some tom hits over the existing ones I recorded, "voila" great tom sound.

It can be time consuming to go through your loops and shots to find just the right sound, then mix it with whatever you need to make it sound right, but in the end if it's just what your song needed then it's worth the time and effort, no?

ok i had mispoken a bit earlier.....although i said beatscape which could also be used i had meant to say DROPZONE which i was playing around with over the weekend.

    anyways.....here's my expected rant :) :

thanks for that suggestion scook i downloaded both tx16wx and shortcircuit 1.1.2
the tx16wx i immediately started dragging and dropping so out of the gate that one seems more intiutive.
question with either of these or both:  so if i take my sample pack above and map a hit or loop to every key on my controller - do all of these samples then get copied into a TX16wx specific folder?  what i mean is - will i then be duplicating these audio files?  to me this is a great way to be "one and done" with my samples so that i could just load up "sample bank X" and it will have that whole list ready to play immediately.  with my current rig however that duplication wouldn't really be an option (HD space is too precious)

.sfz.....is this essentially what i'm suggesting above?  that i have a bunch of samples mapped out to my keys but no audio needs to be re-saved elsewhere?  it's just a text file with instructions.

loops - why is it that with both dropzone and tx16wx i can only get these loops to cycle twice?
i thought the idea of a loop is that it is endless and i can hold that "note" for as long as i desire?

how do i really use a .wav loop of a drum beat?  i would obviously have to get the beat to match my current project - is that possible with a regular .wav or does this need to be stretched/compressed with software?
is this where rex2 files come into play?  a rex2 is essentially a converted .wav file that can sync to the beat of a given project?  and to create these it would be as simple as using Recycle?

as always....thanks for reading my overwhelming confusion :)
