Recording clips a la Ableton Live?
I know, I KNOW, Sonar X3 is not Live, nor should it be. There is, however, one feature from Live which I'd love to figure out how to duplicate in Sonar X3: clip recording.
In live, if you're in the clip view mode, you can click on an empty "cell" (much like Sonar's Matrix View) and create a new clip for recording. If you record directly into that clip, it will continually loop over itself, much like a drum machine (MIDI clips do this, not entirely sure as to audio clips). The net effect is that you can play the initial parts of a 2-bar riff, say, and then listen to it repeat and add a few notes to the loop here and there without creating an entirely new clip every time you reach the end of the clip's length.
With X3, thus far I've not figured out how to do this, or if I even can. It doesn't appear that one can record a new clip within the Matrix view. When you set up looping in track view, it seems as though no matter which "comping" option you've chosen a new "take" is going to spawn every time you reach the end of the designated loop range. So if you listen to a loop two or three times while recording MIDI, to decide what notes, if any, to insert, you wind up with several takes that have to be manually combined before you can tell how they sound together.
Is there a way to prevent Sonar from seeing a repeat of the clip as the trigger for a new "take" to be created? I've tried setting it to record takes over existing audio, but that hasn't done the trick.
I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself clearly at all. Hopefully, I am, and someone has some insights into how I might solve this particular issue.
Thanks in advance,
JL
