I'm not at my DAW right now, but I believe something like this will work:
Keep you main project open. Open the midi file as a second project - so now you have two projects open. Copy the track or tracks you want from the "midi project" into your target project. Somewhere in that process is the option to select whether or not you want to include tempo information in the copy. That's the part I don't recall specifically. You may need to do a "Copy Special" or "Select Special" or something like that, but I'm pretty sure you can make it work. I think there's a check box for including notes or events, and/or, yes, tempo.
'sorry I can't be more specific, I'm working from memory here, but I'm pretty sure I have done this...
