"General error" when trying to save. Please help! [SOLVED]

I have project open in my X3 Producer.
Ctrl-S to save pops up "General error" message box.

Any ideas how to save project? I don't want to lose changes...
Project is working OK but only saving gives this error.

Are you working with video? I had this very same error this week (Sunday), as well, while working on a movie trailer. Deleting the video appeared to allow me to save. I also submitted a crash report associated with this behavior (or at least it happened during the "General Error" time frame).  In addition,  "Save As..." caused a problem as well (the Save As copy being corrupt).
However, I haven't had this occur on any other video-associated projects.

Edit: Of course "General Error" is so non specific, who knows what's going on?

If "Save as" to a new location and name does not work, you may be stuck with the autosave or versions (assuming those features are enabled).

Possible you are getting close on hard drive space?  (less than 20%)

Or page file size may need increasing, or out of memory?

I had this happen with a project once. It did not involve video. It seemed to relate to corruption caused by my pulling a large number of a combination of stereo and mono one-shots into a mono audio track. What I did was return to a previous version and re-pull each one-shot into the track, one at a time, saving each time. At some point I'd get the general error, go back to a previous save, and continue. Eventually I "cleaned" the track and stopped getting the error.

What might work is to copy all, open up another project, and paste into it. Try saving. If that doesn't work, you need to find out if something in a particular track is causing corruption. Again assuming you can copy from the project, eliminate tracks one at a time in the copy and see if you can save. If so, then you've found the corrupt track.

This is all very "shot in the dark" but hopefully this might give some kind of a clue. It is very frustrating as there is no real indication of what the problem is. To Bob's point, though, I was running low on hard drive memory so maybe that's another clue.

    No video.
Available physical memory: > 23000 MB.
Hard disk space: system disk 70 GB free, data disk: 1 TB free.

But now miracle happened! :) I started playback and stopped it (too see that project is still alive). Save. No error anymore!

This DOES suggest that frequent backups are CRITICAL.  :)

Yeah, just now I got the same error message which prompted me to check this forum.  I did what the OP did (hit play and stop) was able to save it.  ...pretty strange but.  It's happened at least once before.  And I DO save often!  ...for the most part...

Hit play after closing the error dialog... After the song plays you will be able to save again... I had a problem with this and lost some work... So the easy fix is a lifesaver!
