Older V-Vocal Clips in X3e

V-Vocal is installed. So is X1 through X3e.

[edit= for clarity]

Here  it is:

Older project that I started on 8.x and have remixed, re-recorded, and just added things to it over time.I have the main vocals (all vocals in this project actually) frozen. I used AS to align a few spots with the harmony/backing vocals and came across a phrase I wanted to alter the pitch.

So I unfroze the track. Here is where it gets weird: After unfreezing the track, all editing of this track was lost. It's volume was much lower, eq'ing was gone, just sounded like the original raw trk. It was then that I realized they were VV clips because the V-Vocal Clip name on each clip. So I decided to just go ahead and use VV to alter the phrase.

I tried to double click the clip and my mouse pointer went into it's circular thing (waiting) then went away and nothing happened. Tried several more times (and noticed that the "activity/status bar" showed briefly in the "Now Time" control bar module) and still nothing.

I tried to select this clip (which is now unfrozen) as a "Region FX" and choose VV, but all of the VV options were grayed out. Only option available was Melodyne. So I choose that and Sonar went to "white screen" and I had to force it to close.

[/edit= hoping I made more sense and get more responses! : ) ]

As far as I am aware, V-Vocal is no longer part of Sonar as per X3. But it should be available if you have an older version of Sonar (seems to work with X2) still installed. Did you uninstall the previous versions of Sonar?

Have you tried just double clicking on the VV clip ?

FWIW when using VV I never leave projects with open instances - always bounce to clip when I'm done as the orignal clip is still there if you want to do it again at any point. VV has always been a bit flaky for me and if anything was ever going to cause a crash it was most likely that. With ARA in X3 it seems a lot more stable, but since having melodyne (editor) I haven't used it enough to know if it's 100% trustworthy. Still worth having though, as it stil does things that melodyne can't.

Thanks for the responses. Yes X1-3 are installed on my box. And no, V-Vocal hasn't been uninstalled.

Also tried to double click the V-Vocal clip and nothing happens. And I thought that I had this song finished, but I opened it up and you know the rest. Always can do something better!!

Anytime this happens to me, selecting the whole track and bouncing to clip fixes it.

I forgot to say these tracks are frozen. I wanted to point that out last post.

OK, you've lost me now..... freezing a track renders all the clips/fx to audio and removes any open vv clips IIRC, so where is the VV clip you are trying to access ?

Also, have you tried any other projects - does vv work in them ? Does it work in a new project ?

Thanks for pointing out that I'm not clear. Sometimes it seems obvious. But I know from being here on this forum that's it's only obvious to me! : )

Unfreezing tracks does remove such things as clip automation etc, which is the downside of using the freeze function. I've never frozen an audio track, only synths for the obvious reasons, but when it comes to mixing, I usually drag any frozen track audio to a regular audio track and mute the synth one before applying any automation etc, so that if I do have to un/re freeze the synth at some point the edits are still there on the audio track and I can then drag my new frozen audio into the track with the automation in place.

As for your current problem I'm wondering if it's something with you trying to apply the ARA version of VV to a clip that had it applied in the old way and it's throwing something out. Equally, I've never tried it, but attempting to apply melodyne to a clip that it thinks already has VV on it, may be a problem too. Try cloning your audio track first, then on the clone, bounce to clips and then reselect the clip you want to change and try adding vv / meodyne then, see if that works.

    Re: V-Vocal Clips in X3e 2014/04/09 05:04:49 (permalink)
Paulo I got.it.worked out. But the workaround lead me to some conclusions.

I took the frozen track and bounced them to clips. Once I did that, they were still VV clips!

So I went ahead and unfroze the whole track. That allowed me to great a region and select VV and the Editor would open. But it opened in the multidock, and was really big and only half the UI showed!! Crazy. I had to undock VV from the multidock. Resize it, work on that phrase, then do it all over again for each phrase!!

After about the third or fourth one I said f this! I also realized that the previous edits with VV wasn't there anymore after I unfroze the track. So I would have to do them all over again!!Aghh!!

But here is were backup saved me. I had created a copy of the vocal and put it one another layer before I started editing in VV because VV could get flaky and mess up on you and ruin a track.

I took that extra trk and copied it, used Melodyne and I am all set!!

Paulo, you may be on to something with the ARA version of VV and the old one.

Glad you got it sorted in the end. Is there a particular reason that you freeze vocal tracks ? I've never done that and wonder what advantages are gained by doing that ?
