How do you link notes in Step Sequencer to make longer notes (sorted)

Getting reacquainted with Step Sequencer, which is a little different than in 8.5. Gone is the global swing control, but there seems some key changes too. I can't drag the note lengths to link notes and makes longer ones for instruments. I've watched a video "SONAR Master Class - Drum Production Episode I", and it says to press control and drag, but this doesn't do anything. I have checked the documentation and can't see anything listed in the shortcuts.

EDIT: Figured t out. I thought you could add and drag to link, but seems you need to add the notes, then press control and drag over them to link (CTRL + right click = unlink)

Just watched the video again, and you used to be able to do it in one step, not three. Wonder why they removed this flow?
