Having trouble playing through note events in Event List (workaround taken)

According to the documentation, I should be able to single-step my way through playing note events that appear in an open Event List window.

Here is the documentation section:

"To play events step by step
1. Using the keyboard, hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys and press the SPACEBAR to play the currently highlighted event. If the event is a note event, it plays until you release the SPACEBAR.
2. When you release the SPACEBAR, the highlight moves to the next event.
3. Continue pressing the SPACEBAR to play events one by one.
4. To edit the last event you heard, release the SHIFT key."

When I do the above, it does not produce sound, and it also does not advance to the next event when the space bar is released.  Lastly, it does not enable editing the last event heard when I release the Shift key.

Now, a little further down in the documentation, it does describe an alternative to playing note events in Event List, using Shift + clicking on the desired event with the mouse, and this method does work.

The above holds true for clips that were either captured live or were created using Step Sequencer.

The reason I mention that is that I have an additional issue with editing note events in Event List, for clips created with Step Sequencer.  I cannot edit these note events in Event List.  For clips NOT created with Step Sequencer, I can edit note event data with no trouble.

As an example, if I have an Event List window open where the events I want to edit were created outside of Step Sequencer, and I wanted to adjust the velocity of 5-6 particular note events, I can double-click on each targeted note's velocity cell, and it opens it for entry of new data, and works just fine.

If further into the list, I encounter note events that had been created using Step Sequencer, and I double-click on the velocity cell for those events, instead of opening that cell up for receiving new data - it opens up the Step Sequencer clip for that note.   (yes, I am aware that I could then adjust the desired velocities inside of Step Sequencer, I was just hoping not to have to go through that path for it - which doesn't match the documentation either).

Am I missing something here, or is this a bug?

It will do it for me if I use ALT instead of Shift. See if that helps.

    [edit]

I use CTRL + ALT and spacebar and I can get it to play and advance. Keep holding the spacebar down and it will continue to play the note. But if I release the alt key, it will not let me edit. I have to press enter.

CTRL+ALT+Space Bar works as you describe for X3e.

Neither the above nor CTRL+Shift+Space Bar work for X2a.

Can you please test creating some note events using Step Sequencer in X3e, and repeat your playback test?

    Thanks,

Re: Having trouble playing through note events in Event List 2014/04/08 10:27:18 (permalink)
I just finished adding to the test project in X3a, adding an additional synth, as well as corresponding audio and midi tracks for it.

I then created some note events for that midi track, using Step Sequencer.

Playback DOES work in X3e, using CRTL+ALT+Space Bar, as does the advance.

Double-clicking on any of those notes to change velocities brings up Step Sequencer, rather than opening the velocity cells for editing in Event Viewer.  This behavior is the same as what I reported earlier happening (which had been done in X2a).

SOOO, it would appear that the X3e documentation was updated and is correct with using CTRL+ALT+Space Bar to play and advance note events in Event List, BUT the documentation appears to be incorrect both for editing the last heard event and for what happens with note events that had been created through Step Sequencer.

The documentation for X3e indicates that to edit the last heard note event in Event List, to release ALT, then to release CTRL, but if I do that per those directions, the note will be stuck 'on'.

I will report things - and I have already written a CAL script to do the setting of midi note velocities for what I was trying to do in the first place, so all is well in any case.  Hopefully they will address things at some point.

I can get notes to play that was created with SS, with the Ctrl + Alt + spacebar.

When I try to use the method of editing by letting go ALT key, nothing. And when I double click the event or press Enter, it opens SS.

But if I release the alt key, it will not let me edit. I have to press enter.

This is from the X3 reference guide:

To play events step by step
    1. Using the keyboard, hold the CTRL and ALT keys and press the SPACEBAR to play the currently highlighted event. If the event is a note event, it plays until you release the SPACEBAR.
    2. When you release the SPACEBAR, the highlight moves to the next event.
    3. Continue pressing the SPACEBAR to play events one by one.
    4. To edit the last event you heard, release the ALT key, then release the CTRL key.
The highlight moves back to the last event you heard, so you can make changes.

So, #4 just means that if you want the highlight to move back to the last event you heard (to edit it), you need to release the ALT key first.

Bob had also posted the ref guide text.

I also figured out that you could still hold the Ctrl + Alt keys and then press Shift and it would bring you back to the previous not also.

I thought that it would "Make Parameter Available to change." As in pressing enter. Didn't realize that it just meant the "Highlight"

Yes, but releasing ALT then releasing CTRL plays the note and leaves it stuck on.

And, more importantly, I cannot use Event List to edit note events that were in clips created by Step Sequencer.

Try "Bounce to Clip(s)" on the Step Sequencer Clip(s) to revert to normal Event List editing.

Not for me. IF I press and hold Ctrl + Alt, the press space, the sound plays, and if I release Alt then Ctrl, it just goes back to previous event.

Well, you are actually releasing Space Bar, then releasing Alt, then releasing CTRL.

The documentation does not include the release of Space Bar, and if you hold that and do the other releases, the note sticks on.

Yup, Jlien - PRV is my Waterloo.  :)

And, @scook - I wanted to avoid converting the clips - did think of that, just did not want to do it.

No it doesn't Jlien. It means just momentarily.

    Let me try to explain:
    1.
    Press and hold down Ctrl
    Press and hold down Alt
    Press space bar once (momentarily)
    Result= sound plays.

    2.
    Press and hold down Ctrl
    Press and hold down Alt
Press and hold space bar (for a few seconds)
Result= that note plays all the way through. It will decay naturally. As in a Piano note. Or if it's a synth note and needs some time to develop you will be able to hear it.

    3.
    Press and hold down Ctrl
    Press and hold down Alt
    Press space bar once (momentarily)
Result= sound plays. Highlighted area advances.
    Now release the Alt key
Result= The highlight moves back to the area you were just at. Press Enter and you can adjust/modify.

Now having said all that , Bob this may be intended behavior. But I can see how you would think it's stuck. Hell it may be, I'm just thinking that it's doing what it's suppose to do.

Well, I mean that the sound being stuck is that it will keep on playing for far longer than the original duration of the note event.  I always stop it after a few seconds, so I do not know if it eventually decays or not, but it certainly plays WAY longer than the note should have played in the first place.
