MIDI Envelope NOT Working When Recording
WHY isn't my MIDI envelope (that I spent HOURS getting to sound right) working (taking effect) when I try to record/convert that MIDI track to an audio track? It works great when I'm simply playing back the MIDI version, but as soon as I try to record it from my external keyboard, it records that fine, it just doesn't record the swell that I insert into the MIDI track. BTW, X3 SUX at implementing the envelope feature, but I know that's a futile argument. Just thought I'd vent.

When you say "record" are you using a hardware synth? There's a longstanding bug that MIDI automation doesn't get processed when doing a real-time bounce of a soft synth , but there shouldn't be a problem with automation when recording hardware synths or doing a freeze or fast bounce of a soft synth.

Actually, I AM using a hardware synth. It always worked BEFORE X3.

Double-checked my own setup; I'm not seeing a problem. What controller operating on what synth parameter?

What's the controller name/number that the envelope is generating, and if it's not something generic like Modulation or Expression, what's it controlling on the synth?

I posted the same question on the Alesis forum to verify I have all those settings correct.

Well, all I can tell you is that the functionality works in general, and I run several different hardware synth, including an Alesis QSR, so I don't really can't think what to suggest without more detail about the setup. What if you just record something with sustain pedal and convert the sustain controllers (CC64) to an envelope (Clips > Convert MIDI Controllers to Envelopes)? Does that record correctly?

I'm trying to affect Cntrlr 7 in all instances (MIDI channels). Haven't heard anything from Alesis yet.

If you can get the Alesis I/O to do loopback recording, you can just play the track and loop the audio output back in to an audio track. You'll have some lag in the recording you'll need to nudge a bit. Otherwise the only way around the bug I know of is to assign your envelope to midi channel 1.

The audio's coming from an Alesis hardware synth so the bug I mentioned isn't applicable and neither is loopback recording. If a workaround is ultimately necessary, the easiest would be to copy the CC7 envelope to synth's audio track as an audio volume envelope, but the depth of the volume change will likely change. But if the MIDI automation works on playback, it should work while recording.

Thanks, Scoot. I checked and it IS ticked. I actually decided to record the track to WAV, and then used the Gain / Fade In feature. It may be the Alesis. I've had some really funky performance out of it lately.

The Fusion had a lot of problems, it was so cool in theory but kind of a doomed synth in practice. However, much to Alesis's credit, they did an update late in the product's life that fixed a lot of problems. Unfortunately, because it was comparatively late, quite a few users didn't know about it. Make sure you're updated to the lasted firmware/software as that might make a difference.

Oh! I DEFINITELY got the last update. I bought it right after they released it, thus AFTER Alesis took that bath; which is why I got it BRAND NEW for only $850 in '07. Full Compass was REALLY happy to finally get rid of it. However, as you say, true to Alesis' commitment of giving the customer the best bang for the $$, it has AWESOME features. Unfortunately, they had already taken such a beating, that was the last update they did (ver. 1.24). I still have some issues with it, like WAAY too often when I have a project which is still in MIDI form, I'll hit play, and random MIDI tracks will play random patches, until I hit play enough times to make it do right. VERY FRUSTRATING! Other than that, I've pretty much gotten used to it.
