One Way Out

Here is a new one that I have been working on.  Well, kind of new.  I had this basic rhythm going since last May when I was stuck in Vegas working for 3 weeks.  Other songs kept popping up, so I kept shoving this one to the back burner.  I finally drug it back out and forced myself to add lyrics to the song.  I have toiled over the lyrics for the last 3-4 weeks.  I find myself toiling over lyrics more and more these days.  I'm sure no one else has that problem.

Any ways, I think I am almost done with this song.  I have one small spot that has been bothering me, that I may try to retrack and fix.  I am not going to point anything out though, I want to see what others think.  I maybe my own worst critique, so I will wait and see.  Link below:

I think that you have a good tune here.  I want to listen again and maybe pick up some pointers for you.  However, I think it had more of a Tom Petty vocal feel.  I do remember hearing a crash cymbal throughout that seemed as though it didn't need to be there.  I really liked the vocal when you started rockin' towards the end.

Cool tune... the ending reminded me of Alice Cooper...... The Ballad of Dwight Frye.... but your guitars have better tone.

Mike, your productions just get better and better.  The guitar solo was tasty and fat, and the vocals are quite convincing.  Maybe a little too much cymbal, but not by much.  A slight tweak and you've got yourself a gem.

This is a very good song and arrangement.  Very good vocal, which reminds me a bit of Dylan in his better days.

evadianeplug, thanks for the listen!  I'll check on those cymbals and see if I can get them sitting a little better in the mix.

Herb, thank you for your comments on guitar tone.  Lord knows I tweak with them enough, hopefully they are sounding good.  Part of it is that I feel my playing is getting better as well.  I took so many years off in the middle of my life, that it has taken a while to kind of find my tone again.  All guitars and the bass are using Amplitube 3 on this song.  Just loving the Ampeg amp tone on the bass lately, it punches through so nicely in my mixes of late.  I have been pulling back on guitar distortion lately, which seems to clean up mixes a little nicer.  It never takes as much distortion as you think in these mixes.

Starise, thanks for the listens as well.  I noticed that you spotted this one even before I posted it here.  I appreciate the support.

Hey Lynn, Appreciate it.  I keep striving to get better, hopefully something is clicking.  Lynn, the solo is an Amplitube 3 amp, I don't recall which one off the top of my head.  I don't generally use a lot of pedals, but on this solo, I added a wah, and just set it pretty much in a stationary position that seemed to fit the song.  I'm getting a little better at the subtle techniques in Lead playing as well.

Hey Jude....don't make it bad.   Ha, thanks for the listen bro.  I never quite know how to take Dylan comments, though.  Incidentally, we grew up about 30 miles from one another, though he had quite a few years on me.

Robby, bro....you need to get yourself some better antivirus.

I like it all but the sizzle throughout and there seems to be some sibilance on the vocal.

I like the feel. Drums seems a bit muffled to me. Rhythm guitar could use some sheen too.

The chant "one way out of here" seems like it could use some melodyne or a retrack.

Scotty,  Thanks for the comments.  I will listen for the sizzle and see if I can hear what you are noticing.

Ed, Your input is always valuable to me, even if it is only worth $.02 in 1968.    I will definitely listen with your advise in mind.  I probably am not going to have time to make any changes until I get back from next weeks business trip to Anaheim.

Cool song.  The guitars sound great and good job on the vocal.  I have nothing to add to the comments above other than you might want to consider balancing (volume and position L-R) the vocal/harmony just a bit to make them sound a bit more compatible.
    Nice one!!!

I have several like that... (*That they'll have to pry from me?)

I actually had a bass like that back in the 70s? Birdseye maple... It's what I learned to play the bass on. Then I had another recently, maybe 6 years ago? For a few weeks :-) You've got to love Rickenbacker... They make their own instruments, and by that I mean "It's a Rickenbacker..." Great guitars. You need to learn to go fretless! It's like going braless! :-D My favorite bass ever is my Fretless. It's a Warwick Thumb Bass, but I think it's more about the mode than the manufacture? The mode being "Fretless..." It takes some time getting used to. But when you do? You'll never love a fretted bass the way you'll love that fretless. You trust me on this one. If you don't have one? Set your sights on one. Play it (it will take some time, but not too much if you're a bass player) Learn to play the fretless, you will thank me for this advice if you do so.

Love Rickenbackers, they are certainly unlike any other instrument out there. I will have to try a fret less one of these days Robbie. I'm currently doing some training with my company out in Anaheim, I hope to get back to tweaking this one when I get back to TX this weekend.

Steve & teego, thanks for listening.

I uploaded a new version of this song this morning and have made some tweaks to the areas suggested.  Hopefully it sounds a little closer to done.

Bapu was right, the last little bit of vocals on at the ending needed a slight bit of tuning on the lower register voice.  It was just a tad flat.  Good ears Ed!

Well, it was ok, but it was forgettable.  Please, I don't mean to sound like an ass, just trying to be honest.  I love old, classic rock, and yet, the melody just wasn't interesting.  Maybe it's that particular 3-chord riff, E-G-A, if that's where you played it.  It just doesn't seduce me at all.

Vox and instrumentation sounded fitting and all that, though.

+1 on that cymbal, but other than that it's a great production for this style.  Good song.  You do remind me of Tom Petty - I mean that in a good way of course:)

Thank you for listening Olemon, I appreciate the kind words. I don't mind the Petty comparisons at all, I am a fan of Tom's work. In fact, if I somehow remind folks of his style, I feel like I am accomplishing what I originally set out to do in this genre.

I thought the song had a great groove, I think I would play it a touch quicker but that's just me. I like your mix, everything seems to be where it needs to be and that can be tough to achieve. I too like the tones of your guitar, if there was anything I would pick on I would probably rerecord the vocal line a few times and comping for the best take.
