Interesting Result of Varispeed Application

I finished a mix where the verses dragged a little bit, so I split the file at the verses and used the "ctrl+click drag on the edge" technique to shorten the verse lengths, thus speeding up the tempo (a little over 1%) in those sections while retaining pitch. I figured any audio alterations to the file wouldn't be noticeable, but there are parts where the music is quite sparse. If you didn't know what the music was supposed to sound like you'd never know anything was different, but I could hear the results of the algorithm "at work" in two different places.

I tried the variable speed technique mentioned previously in this forum on the verses (i.e., using the loop construction window pitch change engine but not actually creating a groove clip) but didn't have high hopes, as I figured the change in pitch at the verse/chorus transitions would be objectionable.

However, what I found was that the effect of the pitch change was almost subliminal, and actually enhanced the tempo change. I also found it interesting that although it's well known the ear is more sensitive to pitch variations than level variations, perhaps the ear is even more sensitive to tempo variations. I could definitely feel the tempo change more than I could hear the pitch change.

In any event it seems if the pitch change occurs in a place in the music where there's a fair amount going on, and the change isn't too dramatic, you can not only get away with a pitch change but it actually can enhance the tempo change.

Anyway, I felt that was kinda interesting so figured I'd pass it along. Sorry I can't post a link, but the song isn't up yet - the accompanying video isn't finished.
