Using External Insert and Bouncing to MONO

So, I've been using the External Insert function of Sonar quite a bit lately, but one thing that I cannot seem to figure out is how to bounce the effect and end up with a MONO bounce.  No matter what I do, I seem to end up with a stereo track after the bounce.

I am starting with a MONO track and I am selecting left for both the send and receive channels of the External Insert plugin, I am even selecting Left and MONO on the External Insert buttons, but I still end up with a stereo bounce - what gives?

In addition, does anyone know why you can't select the left side of a stereo pair for the output and input, then select the right side in a different instance of the plugin?  This is a frustrating situation, as it forces me to use two sets of outputs on my interface instead of just one.

Thanks, its a shame that the mono function won't work without the workaround posted in that thread.  I will have to try it when I get home tonight.
