Anyone used these coated guitar strings? (and a heads-up for UK folk)

I just a ordered a set of these DR 'Dragon Skin' coated strings:

Has anyone else used this particular brand, or heard anything good or bad about them?

For UK folk, a few sets (9-42; 10-46; 11-50)  are currently on offer at Strings Direct for £4.99 instead of the RRP of £11.99

DR bass strings are pretty popular.

I'm can't remember if was DR, but I've heard some coated strings shed. But that may be an issue more for us bassists that don't change our strings much.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I've had DR strings without any issues, but never coated ones.  On my basses (when I had 'em) I tried Elixers which worked great though I did have some shedding on one that I used a pick on (and just in the area that the pick hits).

If you're interested, I'm guessing you don't do many pick slides there Steve!

Ron, it was my curiosity that led me to try a set, and also to see if anyone else had used this brand.

I've read a few indifferent reports of other coated strings, but the spiel on the DR packet seems to address the more commonplace criticisms of them.

Mind you, I don't mind experimenting with a set when they're on offer at £4.99 (CAN$9.22) but maybe not so keen at the RRP of £11.99 (CAN$22.15)!

I don't have the make you mention but i have some coated strings.

They feel nice but as someone said they shed their coating.

I also bought some black coated strings but ditched them in the end - playing with little or no lighting in a dingy club, you can't see the strings easily.......... The colour coated strings have a nice feel to them.

Cheers,
Jerry

I have used elixers on bass, acoustic and electric.. but now am kinda hooked on d'addario 9.5s for the shorter scales.

yes I know, 9.5s are for the indecisive..lol, but with 9s on a strat 9.5s on a paul feels right ... I tink

Hi, Steve,

Yes, Sir, DR Strings are almost all I've used for the last 12 years on most of my guitars, and they make a really good quality handmade string that stays "fresh" sounding for an extremely long time even after a ton of hot, sweaty, live performance abuse.

I've never tried the Dragon Skins, but I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion after your check them out.  They look interesting, I might order a few sets to test them out.

I use the DR Dimebag Darrell High Voltage 10/46s, that technically aren't "coated" but are factory "treated" with a product called String-Life, and they take a pounding and last forever.

Best Wishes, and have a good one, buddy!
Bob

I couldn't agree more. I pay ~$25 per set for strings for my acoustics, but buying the first set wasn't much of an experiment because they came highly recommended.

isn't the coating so that there isn't a feel?..:)

find elixir to smooth out the feel and reduce string noise..particularly useful on bass (where the wire is large) and acoustics (where you hear it all)..
but that's elixers and thems is pricyer

Hi,

I wish I knew something about strings!

All I know is that my heart has gone zing more than once! And Roy Wood had nothing to do it!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
