Lanes Fail Sometimes

Hi All,
 
What would cause a lane to fail to work correctly. Specifically the volume lane. I draw and envelope and it works sometimes but other times the volume envelope seems to be ignored?
 
Am I just in a weird mode or something...

    It will be ignored if the Read button is not lit for the lane.
