Why Would This Happen? X2 64 bit no longer the default program.

I use X2a 64 bit almost exclusively.

For some reason, one day all my Project.cwp files became associated with X1 32 bit.

When I right click and "Browse" to re-associate them with X2 64 bit, X2 doesn't even show up in the list. It is impossible to choose it as the default program.

Something happened to my 64 bit program.
Worm or virus?
Corrupted registry?
Windows Update gone wrong?
(This happened around the same time an update occurred.)

Of course I can still open them in X2 64 bit by the Open menu or dragging them in, but it would be nice to know what's going on.

No idea, not to do with Sonar anyway. Doubt it's anything malicious.

Find a Cakewalk Project File within Windows explorer, on the file shift + right click then click Open With then choose Default program. Select 64 bit Sonar and forget about it (instructions for win 8, win 7 is similar just a different order). Then forget about it.

    Again ... unlikely malicious.

This might help (if the above doesn't work):
    1) rename X1's SONARPDR.exe to something (e.g. _SONARPDR.exe); this breaks the association
    2) associate .cwp with X2's SONARPDR.exe
    3) rename X1's _SONARPDR.exe back to SONARPDR.exe

Credit to original poster. As a noob I likely can not link the post so ripped it (replacing 8.5.3 with X2).

Only trouble is X2 isn't in the list to choose it, only X1-32 bit, thus my dilemma....

I have X1-32 bit, X1-64 bit, and X2-64 bit installed. None of the 64 bit Sonars show up when browsing for programs, which is why I think it may be a registry issue.

Well Alexs' solution should work because you'll be manually locating the .exe through File Explorer rather than the Associations interface.

    X32s should be under Drive:\\Program Files x86\Cakewalk\Sonar[x?]
    X64s should be under Drive:\\Program Files\Cakewalk\Sonar[x?]

They likely don't show to the Associations interface because all the .exes will have the same name and .cwp is already associated to one of them and only that is presented ... unless you do the rename hack as above.

There are two posts I made on this (the second is embedded in the first). I upgraded from X1->X2->X3 and the file associations were still on X1.

The MIDI icon association is a little further down in the thread linked above.

THX mettelus. The "open with" procedure as described above has failed in this instance... as also described above. Manual registry override was necessary to fix the problem, as I suspected.

I still don't know why the Windows File Association widget doesn't work. Even after "browsing" to, and selecting X2-64 bit, it will not show or select it. It acts as if it's not there.

There is something screwy going on here. As I type this post the 1st line above completely vanished and I had to re type it. ?????????

Also checked my Restore Points in case I needed to try that and for some reason there is only a few dates available - all from this month. Does Win7 delete restore points every month?

Found my Restore Point storage space was set to 5% so I bumped it to 10. To do this launch SystemPropertiesProtection.exe

I've been having the same "problem" with .cwp files being associated with Sonar 8.5.  The only other selectable option under Default Programs was X1.  Tried the browse function under Default Programs ensuring Always Open with the Selected Program checked with no success.  Tried the registry hack you described, no success.

The easiest solution for me was to create a restore point and then reinstall X3 and selecting only the Program under Advanced Installation deselecting anything else.  This way, it updated my computer to default to X3 for .cwp files and any other files I indicated in the installation process.  Then I ran the X3E update again.  Worked like a charm.

I'm guessing that the reason for the .cwp files associating themselves with 8.5 is this: several months ago I installed all of my old versions of Sonar to have "just in case".  The last one I installed was 8.5.  Maybe it defaults to the most recent SONARPDR.exe file?

Windows will associate files with the latest installed version of that program. However, when using the "Open With" procedure, you should be able to locate and select the appropriate one and not have it "disappear" on you. I've never seen this happen before and suspect it is the result of a recent faulty Windows Update.

After I changed the registry, I can now use the "Open With" procedure and select X1-32 AND X2-64 and they both now show up in the list. For some reason though, when I select X1-64 it shows up in the list as X2, so there's definitely something wrong within Windows.
