Grade my mix?
Hi, everyone! Myself and a friend of mine decided to put 2 weeks to a new collaboration on an Orchestral Pop song. Have a listen and tell me what you guys think of the mix (dagnabit, forgot AGAIN to reference to another mix :/ ). https://soundcloud.com/iamjeromeee/toxic-original-song if you're wondering, his band is currently on tour, so his vocals were all recorded on a Lenovo tablet. I think the quality is decent for that.

I liked the mix and I liked the song! I think the vocal should be a little louder ,it should be a little more out front to my ears. Other than that it sounds pretty good to me.

I do tend to mix my vocals a little too far back... It's something I'll have to definitely overcome in the future, haha! Thanks for listening, teego.

Yes, the sound sounded fine, and the voice got louder at the end and in the vocal part there in of the song. Well, there is always a volume envelope you can also put on a vocal track to raise the loudness in places - like the beginning of the song and that part of it. Later to me it seemed loud enough. Could be difference in speakers perhaps also doing that.

In fact, spacealf, I am beginning to think I accidentally put the volume envelopes on the chorus vocals and the faders for the verses too low and just never fixed it! May've been offset mode. It does at least sound much louder (and more audible) at the end.
A lot of people have commented that the vox is too low, but I guess being the producer who heard the voice over and over and knows what the lyrics are, I'd forget that other people won't know what he's saying if I mix it too low. I'll have to keep that in mind. Thanks, spacealf :D

Nice job.
Too much reverb on lead vocal.
Good stereo image on synths.
Bass is pretty indistinct.
Kick is in reverb - I would keep it dry.
Vocal needs +2db at 3K and +3db at 10K and then watch out for sibilence.
I liked the song and lead vocalist.

Haha, my friend suggested to swamp the lead in verb to create more atmosphere... I'll have to reevaluate because know I'm not sure quite 'how' much I really used... I attempted to drive the bass a bit more, I can agree it needs more power and tone!
During my TRYING to cut sibilance (his original tracks were incredibly so) I think I cut some of the brightness.
(In reality, I more-or-less produced this track FOR him in his vision. He wanted this big, atmospheric sound with these deep sub kicks and stuff, but I'm not quite sure I did him justice entirely- I didn't even get the sound I wanted)

I think this has commercial appeal.
I agree the Vox is quiet and sounds like it would be great louder.
It has very nice tones and style.
Not fond of the electronic "claps" or the "cchhh" that is supposed to be a high hat.
They sound out of context and synthetic with the other, more orchestral, sounds.

your song has a very modern and accessible sound. About the only thing I would change would be to agree with Rimshot and boost the vocal at 10K. I really liked the singer's voice and think you have done a good job of producing and mixing.

+1 to the above. The vocal just needs to ride above the music a little more. I also agree with Glenn that the snare sound doesn't seem to mesh as well as it should. The claps that come in every now and then sound OK to me, but not so much the constant schhh. And you might want to shorten the reverb time a bit and/or cut back on the send amounts. But it is a catchy tune and well done.  PS.... I like harp glisses.

Agree with all Rimshot posted.
I think the vocal is great and has a real uniqueness, (which is why we all want to hear more of it).
There is a chord near the end that sounds like it has a few out of key notes in it, I love that stuff.

Haha, thanks to all, I'm really glad you guys like this one, and thanks a lot for the mixing tips! Like I said, I'll definitely be possibly refining this mix in the future for a single (but for now there's a DL link on the Soundcloud). He and I have a couple of more collaborative tunes like this lined up, hopefully we can eventually take it to the 'perfect' mix :D
