Sorry to hear that Kenny. My van was struggling to do 50 yesterday..I had 8 x 40kg bags of stone chips in the back and it was kinda low on the axle..

The tires on my bicycle don't hold air. Get one of those smart cars but don't park it where they can turn it on its side or upside down. Could get a mo-ped. oh, well, back to the cave.

Hi James , I would be willing to guess that on a regular basis you certainly must put your van to the test for me, this broken car thing could't of happened at a better time … I'm trying to see the glass half full I just got done feeling the crunch of paying my auto insurance for the next 6 months just a few weeks ago ( i got to pay it up front to get a decent price ) I had my car looked at , since I thought it might of been the water pump on the way out …. in a way I wish that was the issue ,,,,but no…..it's much worse …I saw for myself via the mechanic over by the head , there is a gasket that has developed a leak over time …it has decided to scream uncle and let my coolant spurt out …. for me to have this fixed , I have to have the whole area that houses the water pump , the pulleys and the timing chain pulled off just to change that gasket …..it is somewhat a major thing to pull all that stuff off …. the mechanic suggested that we change the timing chain since the motor has to have all that stuff pulled just to replace the gasket ... this is a tough break for me ….right now I'm sort of w out a useable car ….I can't drive it the way it is…. oh well…..that's life Kenny

I just put $2000+ repairs into my wife's car and just got mine out of the shop with $900 worth of repairs. they're expensive! but the saving grace is that we've had our cars paid off for the last 2 years! no payments. if you consider that it's a lot cheaper to pay the repair bills! Sorry about your troubles, tho, Ken! Good luck to you!

That's rough Kenny. I'm very lucky that my daughter's boyfriend is an expert engineer/mechanic and saves us a fortune on garage bills. Had a weird ' whoosh..whoosh..' noise coming from the van's engine a while back and my daughter recorded it on her phone to play back to him. He phoned me later and said ' don't drive it, sounds like the timing belt about to snap'..he was right, it was split about halfway through...maybe 3-4 miles from causing a new engine scenario and much sadness. I've told her to hang on to him...

that is somewhat true , I feel lucky that I live in an are where there a lot of wildlife reserves …helps with a large dog that I have to exercise I got to laugh …. when I was younger I've gotten pulled over a few times for doing my best attempts to hit 55 over the speed limit on a motorcycle … it was a different time back then …in the 90's …when they hit the red lights and sirens I would always pull over the few times they stopped me …they let me go …. I remember this one time when a N Y State highway patrol officer got me at 2 am … I was only doing 80 on a winding 2 lane road that had a 50 mile an hour speed limit when he walked up to me he just stood there shook his head and said "you got to be kidding me " I looked at him and said " I guess it was just too good to be true …." after he looked at my paper work , he saw that I was only about 3 miles from where I lived …. so then he asked me why was I going so fast … I told him that it was snowing and I wanted to get home before the snow started sticking ….. he let me go and told me that the next time he sees me speeding he's gonna throw the book at me those were the good old days Kenny

Bah... Looks like it's mine is dead again as well. After having a non-starting issue yesterday (fixed, but unknown cause still), I drove out to my Mom's place (East Gresham area - 20+ miles away) and a few blocks before I get there I start smelling smoke (NOT good!). As I pull into a parking spot I open the hood and grab a fire extinguisher. Turns out the motor that operates the radiator fans was burning up and radiator fluid was now pouring onto the ground... Wonderful. A friend gave me a ride home, but now I have to deal with that issue tomorrow when I really need to be working to make enough for rent! This should be interesting.

WOW James, it sure sounds like somebody above was watching over you I feel pretty lucky that the person that looked at my car was able to tell me exactly what was wrong if I took it to a shop first I might of had to bend over and grab my ankles …. Kenny

Yeah , I think I saw something that Pedro posted where he mentioned that he is in my geographic area ... well it is certainly interesting to know that a few of us here on The Coffee House could probably someday actually have a cup of coffee together ….. that is if all our cars don't break down on the same day we set to get together craigb Bah... I got some good news ….. yesterday I handed over my car to the mechanic early in the morning in the mid afternoon I went over to his garage and seen a whole pile of my car laying there in the ICU …. it turns out that this mechanic has ethics , when he showed me how loose my timing chain was , I remembered James story in this thread ... anyway , he urged me to swap that out for a new one and he didn't charge me extra for doing it... he figured he was there anyway with how far he tore down my motor ... I wound up baby sitting my car while he went to pick up a new timing chain ... a few hours later I hear a knock on my door and he says it's done I was a little tired when I got my car back , but i did take it for a little spin on the highway felt like I was driving a different car …..it was peppy …..Oh Yeah i did take it up past 55 now my poor old wallets on life support and I only carry it to have my ID with me Kenny

Sounds like your mechanic is a good dude, Kenny. I've always done my own wrenchin', but not everybody can do that. This cable tech gig is hard on a vehicle, and I blew out all three motor mounts on my mini-van. This led to dropping one of the half shafts (the drive shafts in a front wheel drivetrain). That was a somewhat dramatic event. It made four or five healthy leaps as it scattered parts all over the road. I managed to pull it into an automotive glass repair shop, and the desk clerk's boyfriend just happened to drive a tow truck, and he was ending his shift. He cut me some slack on the tow. For the price of parts, some bloody knuckles, and a bucketful of colorful adjectives, I got the old girl on the road again. It was a royal pita, and I can only imagine what it would have cost to have it fixed in a shop. Not long after that, I got into a company van. Now they pick up the tab, and I'm not destroying my trusty mini-van any more.

Hi Robert , Yeah , I got lucky with the mechanic …. everything he did for me , he did on his own time in his own space , away from his day job .. a little birdie upstairs must of put in a good word for me …. I was about to walk away from this car if I had to pay the going rate for this type of repair job …. that's great that you can turn a wrench , and it is somewhat true that not everybody can turn a wrench I'm happy to hear that you kept your mini van on the road …it sounds good that you can use a company van nice talking with you , Kenny
