Re: How's everyone getting on with the Nomad plugs? 2014/05/01 02:16:56 (permalink)
Hey there Tomixornot

I used the entire Nomad blue series plug ins and when I installed X3 they no longer work. The Blueverb that came with X3 will not work in Sonar 8.53 and I do not know what to do to get it back. I have tried remove it and then re-install but nothing seems to bring back my Nomad plug ins. They were the only plug ins that I used in Sonar 8.53. Even though I have purchased X3 I can't use it due to my poor eyesight and have to revert back to Sonar 8.53 so I'd like a little help as to how I can re-instate all the Nomad plug in's.

Thanks
CBJ

CBJ,

Check your nomad vst folder, my guess is, it's probably in :

64 bits folder:   \Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Nomad

or

32 bits folder:   \Program Files(x86)\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Nomad

Move (do not delete yet) the Nomad folder elsewhere and re-install your full version of Nomad. You need to authorize the Nomad once more - depending if you've use online or offline authorization.

If you do install any vst from now onward, it's a good practice to install it elsewhere, and not in ..\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\ to prevent any future bundled locked vst to overwrite your full version. I've put mine into C:\DAW_VST\64\Nomad   ..for 64 bits, and add a new folder "C:\DAW_VST\64" for the vst scan.

I would be very wary of putting an entire mix through a tape simulator plug in.  I have got a Revox B77 high speed half track reel to reel machine here so that is a serious effect as a mastering process. Probably a bit nicer than most tape simulators. So would I necessarily run an entire mix over to my B77 and back. Not always. Tape machines and I guess simulators as well alter the sound of the mix to a certain extent. Transients get softened with a real tape machine. Noise and distortion are also introduced.

So I tend to want to have a real good reason before I would transfer a mix over to a tape machine or use a tape simulator as well. Some mixes just may not benefit from it all. Some may get better for sure. I mastered an album once that had some real jangly electric guitars in the mix and the transfer to tape did a real good job of reigning all that in. But not on all mixes though, in some circumstances it made the mix worse.

You go to a lot of work creating a mix so be careful what you run an entire mix through. You are giving your whole mix the sound of that single process.

It may be better to send only certain aspects of your mix to a separate buss and just apply tape sim over that. That can work a treat while other stuff stays transparent and transient, clean and quiet. Harrison Mixbus is fantastic for that.

I reached for a Nomad plug for the first time recently and was quite happy.  It was the Tube Driver thing, and I had an overly jangly Tele that needed to be roughed up a bit.  I started with the Hammond B3 drive preset and was very impressed.  Had to tone down some stuff, but the included EQ in that plug makes shaping the distortion very easy.  I'll be going back to that one.

I avoided using the Nomad Plugs for a long time so that I could focus on PROCHANNEL.  I find myself pulling away from PROCHANNEL and stacking my FX bin.  I really like the Nomad Channel strip and the pultec copies.  I've even used the graphic eq for some cutting of frequencies.  I like the fact that many of the Nomad plugs have built-in limiting capabilities this has kept me from spiking the next effect.  I very much like the tube coloring.  I am getting a lot of use out of the Nomad plugs now that I am really getting into using them.  For me they have been a worthwhile experiment in mixing.  Dirty little secret, I took advantage of the Breverb upgrade last month and Fabfilter had a sale and I got my hands on Timeless 2.  I'm good for time based effects for the foreseeable future.  But I did some experiments with Blueverb and Oilcan.  Both are very good.

Thanks John... I guess even an old grump such as I has an occasional value... ;-)

Hi Ben... I totally understand what you're saying about color... And as this is I art, we all seek and find different ways of achieving our inner drive's goals... Iw what I want is the color of a nod analog device, then that's what I'd seek, but for me these days, I simply use what I have to get what I want and I am very satisfied with the Sonar collection for achieving this. Over the years they've truly gone beyond my expectations in supplying tools worthy of any artist.... All the extras are a treat in one way or another. Some I use often and some I never seem to need...

I'm glad you're finding the tools you want for your art... I know how satisfying that is... Even the collecting itself is enjoyable. I've owned and/or used many of the hardware tools we discuss for many decades and love them for what they are too...

Funny, but back in the days of 2" tape, we were so much about getting rid of the coloration that devices had... The struggle to do so was the goal of most of the designers... Digital has now given us truly transparent tools so that we can apply their abilities without other consideration. I like the idea of our console emulator which does exactly that... And I'd love a plugin that was an updatable box of color... It does nothing but supply the color of various gadgets and much like convolution reverbs, it could be addd to with the color of any more devices.... I hope we see this soon...

For me most of the time, if I have a sound that I like but it needs some detailing, I'm very glad that I can do this without otherwise changing it's sound... That said, I love the console emulator and would love to see Cakewalk upgrade this to include many more consoles. I think it does a very good job of modeling the 3 boards it does...

Yes, as usual, click on the automation write button, play and move the Nomad controls.
