X3 - problem opening older projects

Upgraded from XP 32 to Win 7 64
Running Sonar 8 64bit I can open all of my older Cakewalk stuff, but when I try
to open them in X3 I just get the "hour glass".

Tried holding shift key down & not loading any plug ins, but it still does it.

any suggestions? Or something I missing?

Thanks

Could you maybe install 32-bit X3 and see if things open there?  It's not much of a step forward, but might help in the debugging process (he wonders).

I would suggest going through some of these problematic projects in your 32-bit Sonar, X3 if they open there, or your prior version if they don't, and making a list of commonly used effects and synths in these projects.

Then, you could do some homework to see which of those have 64-bit versions, and make notes on your list so you know which ones you can eventually get moved to use the 64-bit versions.

After that, I would take one of the problem projects that had the most commonly used effects and synths, and use it to help figure out which effects/synths are not allowing the open in 64-bit Sonar.

To do that, if it was ME having this problem, I would consider:

    1.  With the test project open in either 32-bit X3 or your older Sonar release, save it off to a brand new folder, copying all audio over (which will clean up your audio clips).  This would preserve the original project, and give you a new test version that you could do things to without losing your original work.

    2.  Now open the newly-created version - still in 32-bit Sonar (I would use X3 if it opens there), and make a complete accounting of the effects and loaded synths.

    3.  Then, delete off all the effects, and save the project.

    4.  Now, try to see if the project opens up in 64-bit X3.  If it does, then you know one or more of the effects were killing it earlier.  Before even testing any of the 32-bit effects out one at a time, I would first swap out any possible 32-bit effects for 64-bit replacements, save it off again, then make sure that at least the project loads with the 64-bit effects you just added back in.  (Then you could do the assignments and presets and all of that).

    5.  If the project STILL does not open in regular mode in 64-bit Sonar, than it would point to one or more of the synths being problematic, and I would go through a similar process as what is noted above for the effects.  (You might at this point go back to the original project and recreate the test project - so that you could then preserve all of the 32-bit effects and this time around get rid of all of the synths - but not the midi tracks - and again load up 64-bit replacements that exist and begin testing the loading of each remaining 32-bit synth, one at a time).

I have no idea if I explained the above in any cohesive manner, but the idea is to try to work with either effects or synths, replacing any that you can, and testing one at a time for those you can't, so that at least you are starting with getting a stripped down version of the projects opened in 64-bit Sonar, and fixing up where needed.

There are probably some plugins that are not 64bit ready. If that is the case, then check to see if there are any updates to those plugins (native and non native).  going from Sonar 321bit to Sonar 64bit involves some work and  research as there are many things that work in 32bit and do not work in 64bit when dealing with non native plugins

    Thanks for the replies

I can do some research... Not too worried if some don't work.
The projects do open in Sonar 8 64bit so I'm not sure how much that has
    to do with it.

I didn't install any of my old plug ins as of yet(sorry that I didn't mention this!)

I was wondering if there was a way (besides holding the shift key) to open
projects without loading (or trying to) any plug ins like the older versions do.

I appreciate both of you taking time to help me out!

I've been using my old cake stuff for so long I forgot how the forum works!
If I leave out any info I apologize in advance.
