Piano roll editing causes X3 to wedge

Computer specifications:
-- Dell XPS (i7-4770 CPU @ 3.4GHz, 8GB RAM)
-- Windows 8.1 Pro + Media Center (64-bit)
-- Cakewalk Sonar X3e (64-bit)
-- VST plugs: Native Instruments Komplete 9 (64-bit)
-- Interface: Native Instruments Complete Audio 6
-- MIDI Interface: midiman midisport 4x4
-- Outboard synths: E-MU e64, Oberheim Xpander, Mutable Instruments, Shruthi 1
-- Keyboard:Axiom 61 (USB)

What happens:
I often edit MIDI parts with piano roll editing.  In X3, it feels so natural for me to edit this way.  I'm able to really rip through my fixes.  Sometimes in the middle of an editing session, X3 will freeze up. I get the "waiting circle" cursor. After that, it's all over.  The app is completely wedged.  I cannot restart X3, some part is still running.  Instead of killing the zombie, I typically reboot the machine.

The thing is, I'm really ripping on the changes.  I often have my left hand on Ctrl+S to save the file, my thumb on the space bar to start / stop the song, and my right hand is on the mouse for editing. I'll often make an edit, then immediately press Ctrl+S to save the file. Then to make things worse, I'll press the space bar to start the song up again.  All really pretty darn quick. I wonder if it's something with that...

Today I've been editing purely MIDI parts.  No plugins involved.  I do use the monitor function within X3 to hear what I'm doing.  Sometimes I put VST plugs on the audio for flange or delay.  From what I can tell, it doesn't seem to matter that much.  I'm able to wedge X3 within a minute of editing if I'm going full speed.

As an experiment, I went slower. Waited before I saved; waited before I restarted the song.  The crash didn't happen, but that may have been luck...

Has anyone else heard of anything like this happening?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Yeah, it may be that you are too fast for SONAR or Windows.  Your systems specs are certainly up to snuff.  Unless there is some setting in SONAR that I am not aware of that may have this effect, you might be right.

Hold on... You did not mention an audio interface.  Are your relying on your PC's internal sound card?  If so, then there is your weak link.  It's your sound card that cannot keep up.  I strongly suggest you get yourself a dependable (external) audio interface.  I would suggest something from Focusrite. They have very good drivers for their hardware.  Of course they are not the only producer with good stuff, but they have nice featured interfaces that won't break the bank.

    Kind regards,

Thanks for the reply.  I did note my audio interface, but poorly -- apologies on that.  It's a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6.  It's a USB based interface. But I wonder if that's still the problem.
