MIDI and Audio record fine, but on Playback I only get Audio

Hello All,

I'm using 8.5 Producer and my Boss GT-10 as my source because I'm recording guitar tracks. I know this seems a little odd for you non-guitar dudes, but the GT-10 is designed to do this and it works really well.  Sonar actually finds it as a device.  So bear with me.

I have my Alesis SR-16 and my Roland D-5 (post DX7 keyboard) going into my MidiMan 4x4 on channels A & B respectively. I set up Track #1 in Sonar for The Alesis and Track 2 for the Roland. The GT-10, Alesis, Roland and Sonar and talking and making nice. I am using the GT-10 because I do not have another Audio USB interface to us to record guitar. I have the GT-10 setup so that it is the monitoring system.  Because it is USB, Sonar is cool with it and as a result, I can hear everything coming through my speakers as I'm recording. It's a beautiful thing. The Alesis and Roland are plugged into the sound system from their prospective audio outs and I can hear them loud and clear. SO just to clarify one more time, I can hear all instruments when playing them live and while recording.

So I start recording.  The SR-16 is talking to Sonar and Sonar is recording the drum parts and they show on the piano roll.  The bass line and keyboard parts are doing their thing and I am monitoring the whole she-bang while it records and the piano roll is jotting all of this down.  The guitar part is recording just ducky and the wav is showing up in the track and it's just magic.

Okay, time for playback. I un-arm all the tracks, rewind and press that play button....... what's this? All I hear is Guitar.  None of the midi tracks are coming through.  The midiman is having a party and working fine and if I tap the pads or keys on the Alesis or D-5 during playback they make a sound, but none of the MIDI data from Sonar is coming through my speakers.

I suspect that the only problem here is that Sonar is just being a douche and just doesn't want to play the MIDI back because there is some setting I've neglected to check or set.  My brother says I need to set the MIDI Thru on the Alesis and Roland. I'm thinking if it's recording and obviously talking to Sonar, that shouldn't matter.

Any wizardly advice would be greatly appreciated.

Simple solution, You need to direct the midi track OUTPUT to the appropriate midi port or device.

While your at it you may find like most people that using soft synths will open up a whole new world of better sounds and workflow.
You insert a soft synth, and then point the midi track output to it. Try the TTS-1 for GM set up, and Session drummer for drum sounds. It will be a huge improvement over what your using.
