iLok, how do it work ?

Hi i see many vendors recuire iLok to use the plugins, so i have a question

If i get an iLok2, and buy an vst effect and register it...
is there a limit of reactivations per plugin, lets say if u have to reinstall windows
or is it permanent, as long i have the iLok plug and dont loose/ damage it
or how do the iLok works ?

Can anyone explain me plz , i am considering to get iLok because i consider to buy products from
Steven slate digital and also Softube.

An ILok is a USB Device for storing licenses.
It uses a software program to download and install the
licenses onto the device.

Once the License is installed on the device there is no need to
to reactivate.  It is permanent, but the license CAN be sold and transferred
to another user for a $25 fee...

There are plenty of folks that complain about it probably because they see having an iLok as a hassle.

I gave in and obtained one when there was a plug in I really thought would be nice, but only worked with iLok.

It's been painless for me. Straightforward, easy to use. I have multiple plug ins now that require it.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Once the license is on the iLok it's there for good unless you sell or transfer them to another iLok.
IIRC it holds 500 licenses per.

It's not a great system but it does work.
Luckily I've never had a problem with any of mine. The one I bought over 10 years ago still works.
Also look for Slate or other promo sales that include the ilok as part of the deal. I got 2 free iLoks that way.

Haven't had any problems here either and don't mind...
Only problems I've had were "user error".

One of the nice things is...if you have the plugins installed on multiple devices...
just move the ILok when you want to switch machines...

I have the Steinberg E-Licenser also...no problems...

I totally understand the desire to want to "keep the pirates at bay" - Pirate - Bay...
ha...I made a funny!!

If you don't have a problem with trusting your licenses to a company which had its authorization servers down for over two weeks, then I am sure it's a good solution.

I remember having my electricity down for almost a week after a major earthquake but I still trust my electric company.

I also remember that while the iLok servers were down I could still run my software since all my software wanted to see was my iLok.

I know lots of folks moan about ilok, but I've never had a problem.  Maybe it's one of those "Urban Legend" things where everybody "knows" the person this really happened to.

Gotta side with Jude - put it off forever due to the horror stories but once I got one I never had a problem with it...

Ilok has had problems...mostly due to their own lack of "keeping up to date"
and a lot due to "lack of information"...
But, for the most part, it has been a pretty painless thing.

I got my first one with Pro Tools...go figure..LOL

I don't mind protection mechanisms.  I understand the need...
But most object to "paying for something else" besides the software.
I have people all the time say "Why buy that?  You can just download
it and get a crack"

I understand the time and effort that goes into these things.  I was a programmer.
If the Software companies would stop "overcharging" to make themselves
"look" great and "exclusive", and charge a reasonable price, maybe these guys would stop
"pirating" the software, and the companies would sell more product, and
people would make MORE great music!

If it's about MUSIC, then let it be about MUSIC, and the Money will come...make up in quantity
what you lose in sales by overcharging...IJS

Steven Slate is finally coming to realize this....As are MANY other companies.
Waves has more sales then Carter's has liver pills...why not just LOWER THE PRICES?
It's better to make a buck by selling it then to make NOTHING while everyone steals it!

the old ilok software sucked and truly was a pain in the keyster but the new software/authorizing setup is really slick and quick... and it does protect devs... I have no complaints at all... just picked up the GD-6 acoustic which runs on the UVI workstation and authorization took a minute...
