Issue With Guitar Rig Plug-In

I use Guitar Rig 4 PRO and 5 PRO as plug-ins on SONAR X3(e) Producer Expanded. I don't use them at the same time. Computer: Dell Inspirion, i7 Quad, 6GB RAM, Focusrite 18i20 interface. All updates and drivers are current.

When I instance GR4 or GR5 plug-in on a guitar track, everything works fine when I add most effects such as reverb, chorus, delay, boost, etc. However, when I add a fuzz or distortion module, the volume drops to unusable levels...it's very, very low. I have checked that all volume and gain levels are set properly on all software and hardware.

For example, when I add the Treble Booster, it rocks. But, when I add a Fuzz, Big Fuzz, Cat or Skreamer, the volume of the output drops like a lead weight in a bucket. I can barely hear it. I then have to turn the boost up to maximum, and it's still not loud enough even if I turn all inputs and hardware outputs up.

Anyone else have this issue or a solution?

Thank you, kindly.

Do have any effects downstream that could be causing some kind of limiting once the drive hits it?

Could be the patches are borking out though for some reason. Maybe try uninstalling/reinstalling GR. This might be something you'd have better luck contacting Native Instruments about.

    Cheers.

I just tried it and you're right, the volume output does drop quite a bit with those plugins. I think what's happening is that they're compressing the audio quite a bit. If the volume knob on the plugin doesn't bring the level up to scratch, then just insert a Gain Booster (in the distortion category) at the end of the chain. You should be able to amplify it to maximum volume with that effect.

Beep, I shall try a reinstall as you suggested.

I made inquiry with Native Instruments and posted on the NI Forums. Crickets.

    Sharke,

I have added boost at the end, but results were unsatisfactory. I'll reinstall GR next and report back.

You know, it is possible that NI is trying to make the emulation as authentic as possible. Most guitarists do have fits with dodgy germanium circuits on our analog pedalboards. And, yes, a fuzz box generally needs to be staged into a boost - I prefer a Stagemaster right after the fuzz.

Fuzz pedals do often suck the life out of a pedal chain, so NI may have created a realistic, yet annoying, artifact.

For me, that Gain Booster effect does exactly what it's supposed to, in fact I can boost the gain so much that the meters clip. If that's not happening at your end, then there is a problem. The only other thing I can think of is that your input levels aren't high enough. They might be high enough when using the other effects, but not high enough to result in a decent level after the fuzz effects.

I wouldn't pin my hopes too much on the NI forums. They're notoriously slow and often deserted. Having said that, sometimes I've forgotten about a question I've posted and gone back to it to find that someone answered weeks ago. It's embarrassing not to have replied, but what are you supposed to do when nobody replies to your question for days or weeks? Anyway I would also try the forums at Gearslutz and KVR, there's a bunch of tech heads over there who fall over themselves to answer any technical problem.
