I don't need another limiter, but I am curious to see how well the Hornet performs. I use and love most all of the Hornet plugins. I'll wait for the 40% off sale...that happens about every other week.

Looks interesting. Are they 32bit and XP compatible?

There is a 32bit version, which is nice to add to my new Harrison mix bus.

I tried the demo and I don't like this one much. It sounds very compressed compared to my other limiters. LimiterNo.6 and Pro-L are my favorites. I use the Concrete limiter on tracks pretty often. LimiterNo.6 is free and still king in my book.

That's what I find most interesting...
Some of the "Free" products, or almost free, are "as good" if not "better" then the ones you pay hundreds for...
And these CEO's still can't seem to "come to their senses" about prices...
Old "habituals" die hard...some go out of business...

I use LimiterNo.6 for the heavy lifting and then Pro-L for it's metering. Works great.

So Magnus is great if you're doing Metallica covers but not a lot else.
I have Limiter 6 on my radar when I eventually fix my DAW.

Clint, I just downloaded Limiter No.6 and I have to say, it's pretty cool! I hadn't come across this before. Thanks for the heads up! I tried the Magnus. Meh.

What do you find is missing in my limiter? I'm open to suggestions since i want to improve my plugs as much as possible, every feedback is more than welcome. Saverio

Hi Saverio, First off, your Sybilla is my go to de-esser. It works great! I found the Magnus a fine limiter but I didn't think it to be above and beyond what I already have. I do appreciate your work and think your plugins rock!

I'm going to spend more time with Magnus tonight and be sure I'm not overdriving the clipper. I may even open the manual! Great customer interaction with Hornet...Saverio is quick to respond and make fixes when needed. It's appreciated.

+1. I find myself drawn more and more to the amazing independent developers like Hornet, Klanghelm, etc. This forum is the best resource I have found to find out about new plugins and their developers. Thanks!

Marketing a new limiter has got to be an uphill battle these days, with such a plethora of great products already out there. Saverio can compete on price against the entrenched big boys - Pro-L, Elephant, Ozone, Sonnox and such. But there is some tough competition in his price range too, e.g. Barricade. And of course, there are the top-notch freebies like Limiter No. 6 and LoudMax. The former also has two-stage limiting with a clipper, plus a compressor, and the latter matches Magnus' simplicity of operation. If I was in his shoes, I'd be looking for ways to distinguish Magnus in that crowded arena. One differentiator is the lack of copy-protection. No dongle, no challenge-response, no license files, no hardware-dependent signature that makes the plugin stop working when you upgrade your motherboard. That, IMO, is the headline.
All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to. My Stuff

The RMS meter is nice. For me a limiter just needs to be as transparent as possible with a GR of around -3. I'm not going to push my stuff anymore than that...ever. My first opinion of Magnus was it sounded pretty squashed, but in fairness I didn't spend much time with it. I'll give it another go tonight. I believe Hornet is just trying to have a complete package of mixing/mastering tools. I wouldn't be surprised if a reverb comes soon. I hope it's a decent convolution reverb. 64bit true stereo with a simple delay/modulation for around $20 would be sweet.

The idea is in fact to build i a complete set of basic mixing tools and I'm already researching on how to build a good reverb, I'm actually more geared towards an algorithmic solution since i don't like convolution very much as it introduces latency and i really want my plugins to work in realtime as viable digital mixing options (that's why i always use oversample avoiding lookahead buffers for example) Regarding Magnus, i think you are hearing it as non transparent because of the auto-release time i've chosen that is quite fast to be able to reach high RMS levels in electronic music, where pumping is something people are accustomed to, try to use the manual setting with a slow release, it should feel more transparent Saverio

Ok, I got pretty good results last night with Magnus. If I switch to X2 or X4 oversampling It sounds the same, but the meters reduce to -2 or -3. It is very hard to get to .02 with oversampling on. I do believe I was being a little aggressive with the clipper at first, but in it's default state without oversampling...it does sound very good. I'm a guitar, bass and drum guy and do not do electronic music ever. I realize this is geared more for those guys. Good work Saverio! Keep it up.

When you turn on oversampling, especially 4x, you are operating on intersample peaks so the gain reduction you are seeing is more because of those peaks Saverio
