Hi Julien,
To me it doesn't sound like the guitars...it's the whole mix being a bit over comped. The guitar solo may sound over-compressed to you. That's actually his sound...that old 60's tone. We call that "the starved plate sound" which means the tubes are saturating heavily there to the point of sounding "choked" off. The compression I'm hearing on the whole song, affects the snare drum pretty bad. It loses snap when all the instruments are playing in full. When the instruments back down, you'll notice you hear the snare a bit more relaxed. This is the first sign of limiter over-use. The first thing to change in an over-limiting situation is the instrument with the hardest transient...which of course is the snare. I don't hear any pumping or breathing within the mix though.
That said, I sincerely don't think any of this is bad....but it would sound better a little less compressed. Then again, this is the format for today's music as much as you or me may be against it. At the end of the day, if this is being shopped to a major label or may have possible airplay, it's a fine representation of the band. In a world where people are accepting lesser quality material and over-compression, I wouldn't worry about it as I've heard 100 x worse that was still acceptable. When something totally sounds like @ss to where it makes you cringe or throw up in your mouth, THEN you worry. But I'd not let this one get to you. It's the sound of 2014. Hope this helps.
