Newly released Altiverb 7 Sonar compatibility bug

Now that Aliverb 7 for Windows has finally come out (as of April this year) I was wondering if anyone has had issues with it in the Sonar X versions.

I am still on Sonar version 8.5 (as there is little about the upgrades that entices me), but having just obtained Altiverb 7 I have come across a rather significant issue: Altiverb keeps returning to the default IR - “Teldex Berlin Studio” – when you reopen a saved project. In other words, if you choose a different room/hall to the default Teldex and then save your project, when you reopen your project you will find that Altiverb has gone back to the default Teldex.

I contacted Audioease support on this and was given the answer that this is a bug in Altiverb 7 that only seems to manifest in Sonar. Now I am wondering if this only happens in Sonar 8. Is there anyone using the X versions of Sonar who has tried Altiverb 7?

I just tried Altiverb 7.2.2 in SONAR X3e PE and do not see that happening. It retained the setting I saved with the project. You may want to be sure you have updated Altiverb to the latest version before jumping on an upgrade to SONAR, if you haven't already done so:

    Here's the release notes:

The Altiverb 7.2.2 update for Windows and Mac contains the following fixes:
    • AAX: audiosuite delay removed when selecting tracks with different track counts
    • VST: remembering of user IRs is working now
    • WIN: Favorites are remembered now
    • AAX: removed faulty AAX DSP versions in Altiverb in Pro Tools (Altiverb AAX DSP is not ready yet)
    • VST: better handling of speaker arrangements
    • OSX: DP no crash anymore when editing/showing IR automation in track
    • OSX: installer improvement regarding a chmod
    • OSX: sse version logging
    • Live: short mute on stop removed
    • removed logging of OpenGL errors
    • some small optimizations in: resampler & hi-lores switch
    • some other small improvements

Thanks Darinbad for your response. Unfortunately the update doesn’t address this issue, it only addresses the remembering of user IRs, and Favourites. I have the latest version 7.2.2 installed and it returns to default each time on reopening a file in Sonar 8.5.3.

I should clarify that any changes that I make to Altiverb’s settings – such as eq adjustments, reverb time, brightness etc. - are indeed being successfully retained upon reopening the saved file; it is the actual IR itself that is not being retained. So I could load something like a large cathedral, and then mess with the Bright knob, the eq, and maybe the input and output amount, then save the project, and later reopen it to find that all the settings have been remembered but its back on the default IR – the Teldex studio.

I really don’t want to upgrade Sonar unless I have to: Darinbad, could you possibly clarify that when you have tested Altiverb 7 in X3e PE that it retains not only the settings but the IR as well? As we are both using Fireface 800 and Windows 7 64, I assume that I should get the same result as you if I upgrade to Sonar X3.

Hi Dilaco1, I can confirm that all settings are retained as expected. I tried several different IRs and settings, closing SONAR and then re-opening several times. I can't see anything unusual happening here on my system. To be clear, I am using the 64 bit version of both SONAR and Altiverb.

There's no guarantee that upgrading SONAR will solve your problem, but it sure seems likely. Maybe you can try the Demo of SONAR X3 first.

Thanks Darinbad for confirmation. Yes, I am using 64 bit Sonar and Altiverb too. Perhaps I will try the demo, though I still don't want to upgrade if I don't have to.
