[Solved] VSTi Gone?

I reinstalled Sonar so I could get back some stock templates and anything else I was missing like loops and stuff. I had a dirty DVD disc and it didn't install everything. This time, after uninstalling/reinstalling Cakewalk Sound Center is missing. What am I missing?

Well, after further review... The plugins are located in Program Files>Cakewalk instead of Program Files(x86).

My fresh install of Sonar on another machine has them in Program Files(x86). Is this where they belong? Does it matter? Both machines are 64 bit Windows7.

It depends on which version(s) of SONAR are installed. If a 64bit version of SONAR is installed, the Cakewalk Sound Center is installed in "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Cakewalk Sound Center" even though it is a 32bit synth. The actual location of the synth and it's supporting files does not matter as long as the vst scanner can find the dll.

Thank you. I currently have Sonar X1 LE installed. I demo'd the X3 product so maybe that is why the Vstplugin folder was installed into the 64 bit region of my computer, then upon reinstallation of Sonar X1 LE it did not get installed? I can only guess. Anyhow, the important thing is I've moved the vst folder to Program Files (x86) and everything works. Thank you for confirming Cakewalk Sound Center synths are 32 bit. Also, I'm assuming X1 LE is 32 bit because I had no option to install as 64 bit. Correct assumption?

X1 LE is 32bit only. After manually relocating the Cakewalk Sound Center you may want to edit the registry to reflect the change. In the registry "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Cakewalk Music Software\Cakewalk Sound Center\1.0" update key "Installation Folder"

Should you ever install an expansion pack, it needs to know where the program is installed.

scookIf a 64bit version of SONAR is installed, the Cakewalk Sound Center is installed in "C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins\Cakewalk Sound Center" even though it is a 32bit synth.

this needs to be fixed

Porting Cakewalk Sound Center to 64bit seems a waste of time.

i mean that it should be installed in the correct location on a x64 machine, "C:\Program Files (x86)\..." i wouldn't expect a x64 version of the sound center!!

If we were to drill that deep I don't think VSTs should be under any program files folder path (in order to avoid permission issues). The default should be changed. You are of course able to customize your file paths to your requirements.

fenderguy4life...I've moved the vst folder to Program Files (x86) and everything works...

And then, as Scook instructed, you needed to edit your computer registry - It all worked out, and it was caused by this questionable thing of having that 32 bit plugin installed in the 64 bit Program Files.  The exact same confusion happened to me - I ran the installer again when Sound Center didn't show up where I expected it - Then figured it out.

But what you did was like moving a house to a new location, instead of just updating a map.  In Sonar's Plugin Manager, you list whatever locations you want to include in the scan.  Ideally you have all your plugins in one VST sub-folder in the main Sonar program folder, but if you know there are VSTs in other locations, just include them in the scan list.  In this case you could have added the VST folder in your 64 bit area.

Understood, but I think the house did need to be moved in this case. After editing the registry, Sonar took a few more seconds to open. After it reassembled itself I checked the 32 bit folder I found the (template) icons had changed to X1 icons instead of plain paper icons. Since I'm not running X1 under the 64 bit windows it has done something. I can assume it was beneficial. I could have just pointed Sonar to the folder, mapping it, but as scook stated.

Not sure if mapping would have been the best option in this case. Maybe if I was running 64 bit Sonar and had 32 bit and 64 bit plugins installed in the two locations mapping would be ideal. Thanks again scook. I like my computer organized as much as it appears possible.
