'Unable to open audio playback device' on different machine

Hi everyone, I am experiencing a problem with the error "Unable to open audio playback device. Device may not support the current project's audio format or is in use".

Myself and a friend are collaborating on a project and hope to be able to send project bundles back and forth but for some reason when I try to open files that he sends I get the above error. If I switch to WDM mode and choose my computer's sound card I can then get Sonar to play back, but I cannot get it to play using ASIO with my Allen & Heath ZedR16 mixer/interface. We have tried sending the file with no inputs/outputs set, making sure bit depths and rate are the same but still no cigar. Do you guys have any ideas??? Thanks

    make sure your audio device is set the same as the project. if it is a 48 project and the device is set for 44, sonar can't run it. 44 project and the device set to 48 won't run in sonar either.

    SONAR Platinum Lifetime 64-bit; Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 2nd Gen.; KRK Rokit 5; ASUS P9X79; INTEL I7-3820 3.6 GHZ;
    850 WATT POWER SUPPLY; EVGA NVIDIA GTX560 TI 1GB;
    Windows 10 Home 64-bit; 32GB RAM;
    2 Internal SSD Drives, 3 External USB drives.

    Further to Dlion's post, check your bit depth (16 vs 24...) as well.

    No, this is the infamous error you will get when using Bundle files. Use CWP files in folders saved as "per project audio folder"
    There is no difference in the size of the transfer file it's just 2 folders instead of an icon.
    Also certain things are stripped away when using Bundle like Audio snap.

    It's a mistake to think that two people need to use the same software before they can collaborate.  Collaborations would be very rare if that were the case.  The normal way to work is for each user to maintain their own version of the project and exchange "stems" in the form of WAV files (or some other audio format). Each contributor is free to use whatever facilities they have at their disposal.  You don't even need to know (or care) what the other guy is using.  But initially you all need to agree on the tempo, key and sample rate.

    I suggest that you forget about the technical issue that is holding you up and get on with the music.

    No, no not at all. The error is just as described. His device isn't set to the correct sample rate or can't be changed to the correct one.

    It's likely that there is another application on the computer that is trying to grab the ZedR16. I'd check and make sure Windows sounds are disabled and you're not running a web browser in the background. You could also try going to Edit > Preferences > Audio > Playback and Recording, and check the "Share Drivers with other Applications" box.

    Best Regards,
    Seth

    Bit depth doesn't matter and its not the problem. Sonar can have multiple bit depths in a single project.

    This error is related to a sample rate mismatch or his sound card needs to be set tot he correct sample rate before opening this project. Nothing more, nothing less...

    Thanks Seth, I stand corrected, the error message people get is " The file is corrupted" I believe.
