[Solved] Introduction + Focusrite 6i6 Setup in X2 Studio

Hi All,

My name's Jason and I'm a novice recording artist; I've been playing guitar about 17 years and my style varies between open tuning folk, Opeth-style metal, and post rock. My current rig is Windows 7 with an AMD Phenom X4 975 processor @ 3.6 GHz, and 8 GB of ram. I'm running Sonar X2 studio and I'm finally getting to the point where I can get stuff working and recording.

To make the experience better, I bought a Focusrite 6i6 after my Behringer Xenyx 1622 went out on me. This is really a good machine and has improved the sound quality dramatically. I do have a couple issues, as seen below.

1. I'm getting double sound - both the sound of the guitar from the 6i6 and from the DAW. My expectation is that the sound of the DAW would negate the sound from the interface. In this case, I'm getting both.
2. I've noticed there are several DAW drivers for the interface: DAW 7, 9, and 11. Which one(s) should be used? Could this be the reason I'm getting both sound signals?

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

The DAW has no control over the interface. All the DAW can do is respond to the input echo setting on the track. If you are hearing the direct monitor signal  from the interface and the input echo from the track it is up to you to either turn down the direct monitoring or disable input echo.

Hopefully someone with Focusrite hardware will be along shortly to provide hardware specific help.

You'll need to learn the ins and outs of the mixer application that comes with Focusrite interfaces. You want to either monitor the guitar directly from the interface, called direct monitoring, so you don't hear any latency caused by processing the computer; or, turn off the feed from direct monitoring, enable input echo on the audio track whose input is your guitar, and live with some degree of latency. The amount depends on several factors, but you can try various latency settings for your interface and see what's the lowest amount that still gives reliable audio without clicks or pops.

I was tweaking the MixControl program that comes with the interface, adjusting the sends to be DAW 1. That seems to have alleviated it. Thanks for the advise guys!
