My mother in law

serious thread -

my mother in law had a major stroke 2 1/2 years ago and has been unable to feed herself, clothe herself, go to the bathroom, etc.  she's been completely dependent on my wife, her sister and my father in law to take care of her.  she had dementia before the stroke and that was scary.

now she's constantly having seizures unless we keep her sedated.  she's at home after her last visit to the hospital and is receiving 1/day hosp-ice care.  she had a bad night last night and they're asking for 24 hour hosp-ice at this point.  she hasn't eaten anything except applesauce with her medication in a week and a half and hasn't had anything to drink in 1/2 week.

I keep thinking that "it won't be long now" but she still hangs in there.

it's a very very sad situation.  I've never experienced "hosp-ice."  I knew what it was, but until you experience it, then you really don't know what it is.

I"m sure there's no answer I'm looking for, and not even looking for sympathy.  just expressing my sadness at the situation of sending someone home to "be comfortable."

EDIT:  I am appalled that "hosp-ice" is censored.  unbelievable that they can't fix the censor log to allow words that INCLUDE those letters but have nothing to do with the derogatory slang!

Sorry to hear that Beags......it is a sad situation that unfortunately comes with age. I also had close family members that went through similar condition and it's never easy to come to grips with it. She's fortunate to have good family support in making her as comfortable as you possibly can and I'm certain she's included in your prayers. A strong supporting family is priceless, and I hope things tun out for the very best for your mother in law  and your family.

    Sorry to read that, Beagle.

A few times in my life, I've had to cope with people hanging in there for such a long time.  It was heart-breaking to see them go on with no possible hope for recovery, sometimes completely stripped of their dignity, but still hanging in.

Best wishes to you and to your family.

Don't be sad, Reece. It's a matter of acceptance, really.
You know what's coming, and so does she. Be glad she can spend this time in a familiar and comfortable environment, with the family. I can think of no better way to close the curtain on a long and glorious play.
We did in-home hospice with my first wife. It wasn't necessarily easy, but it was the right thing to do.
She said her goodbyes in the comfort of our home, and when the time came, she was happy, and ready to go.
Your family is strong, and has supported her all the way. She may not show it, but she needs that, and she trusts it.
When it's over, you'll be glad you had this time. Know that she is.

Bob - unfortuntately she's asleep all the time because of the pain medication.  she was able to recognize my two older boys when they were in last week.  but this week she is on so much medication just to keep her out of pain that she doesn't do anything but sleep.  that's the sad part, is that she can't even recognize family and smile at their touch at this point.  we just keep giving her medicine and changing her and that's all there is left.

I'm thankful that Martha is no longer in pain.  RIP, Martha.  Even though it wasn't a surprise, her passing will probably still hit you you and her family pretty hard.  Don't beat yourselves up over the sense of relief that comes along with the grieving process.  I have some experience since my dad passed away after a long illness many years ago.

You, Martha and both of your families have my sympathy and my prayers.

Sorry to hear that news Reece.

There are more mother-in-law jokes than any other kind, but I have to say this much..... My in-laws where like parents and friends to me. My own father died when I was 16, and my mom just passed in Feb. My wife's parents have always been good to me. Her dad passed several years back but her mom is still with us, and is included in most of the activities we do.

I'm sorry for your loss. Having very elderly parents, I know how helpless you must have felt. My dad went back to the hospital over the weekend in the ambulance. He almost bled out from a colon problem.
You don't know how they keep going and there is nothing you can really do... and if you do something you wonder if it is the right thing or if you're hurting more than helping.
My mom sleeps a the time. She wakes up long enough to not recognize anyone... end of life care is sad and we are all so helpless.
I'm glad her struggle is over and I hope you heal and you and your family grows in love and faith and you all carry something away that will enable you to help someone else in their time of trouble.

    Thank you very much everyone.

Bob - you and Donna are very much a part of our extended family and I am sorry we have not gotten together lately.  if you see this, the visitation is tonight between 6 and 8pm at Laurel Land.

Julen - that's the way Martha was in the last week before she left.  my prayers for you and yours.

Bubba - my sympathies.  if your mother in law is anything like mine she was a wonder lady and I called her Mom.

Jon - your post brought me to tears!  thank you my friend.

I thank everyone very much from the bottom of my heart.

Tonight will be the visitation, tomorrow is the memorial service, which I am leading the music for. I hope I can get through it without breaking down!
