Outer Limits

This is a song written for a book and in the book the characters go to another dimension that they call the "outer limits"...I know the vox is in need of some serious work. I haven't tuned anything yet. I am especially interested in any ideas to make the harmonies fuller and more apparent, but any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Sounds like a good start to me!   It has bit of a classic/space rock vibe to it, which is cool.

Other than tightening up the timing of the vocals that you already have, I would A) Add more layers by double/triple tracking each voice,  B) Add some higher harmonies (Styx ), and C) Give them all a decent stereo spread to envelope the listener.   That "hey-o" line would work great for all of that IMO.

Thanks Steve..maybe a job for melodyne? I'm not sure how high I can go on the harmonies. I had another listener mention Styx as well....they were one of my all time favorite bands.

I'll come back when I have more...thanks for listening and the comments.

Sounds real good! Nice mix and a nice song. As for the harmonies I agree with what was said above, tighten them up on some of the timing and maybe add the high harmony, sounds good like it is though.

I like the texture of the keyboard a lot. Sounds kind of like Rush without the guitar. What you're doing with the vocals is really cool too. Definitely interesting...I was listening to see what you would do next. I'm not very good at the mixing thing myself, but it seems like the vocals could fit in to the mix better, like they stick out a bit.

I like this a lot. I can hear the Rush likeness also. Perhaps some vocal harmonies in the I-I-I-I-o-o-o parts would sound cool.

teego- Thanks for listening! Thanks for the tips.
gtrpastor- Thanks for listening and commenting. The vox are up for definite rework.
Scotty..Thanks! I plan to develop this further.

Just to give you some idea of comments I have received on the song.
    "the vox parts sound cheesy"
    "the drums sound too midi"
"the words are not quite there"
    "it needs more bass"

You know I have to agree with most of those (excluding the bass comment)...Maybe I can make the vocal parts say something but still retain the effect...and make the vocals sound more pro.
I could replace the drums with better drums.
The words were hastily written and i agree they need to be more refined.
This is the kind of honesty that makes us better! Thanks!

    Tim,

good stuff.  I like the idea of mucking around the vocals - melodyne would work well.  Esp. w/ the chorus stuff.  There used to be a preset on the synclavier that did million of voices.  Really get into the spirit of the thing.

I love the old-style synth leads, right in keeping w/ the spirit again.  And the midified toms - those sounded great, worked well but didn't sound dated at all.  And the piece has a nice groove.  Look forward to hearing more.

Get rid of the very first vocals so the music brings in the second vocals, which are awesome and the rest of the song sounds great. Love how the synth comes in and the rest of the songs moves along pretty nicely. The vocal harmonies sound pretty good actually and the mix is nice and clear. Nice song!!

Sounds great to me. Thought the vocals were a little low at the beginning but not the case at all as the song progresses. Enjoyed the listen.

I agree with the others: this is a great start and now that you've got the song (except maybe some wording), you can really focus on the production. Looking forward to hearing the next version of this.

The comment about the drums is true, but can be easily fixed with some variation in the drum pattern and judicious nudging.

Though I'm still listening for some higher falsetto lines in the choruses...

Steve I might need a testicle adjustment to get those notes...or a female singer lol. Thanks for listening to the corrections and commenting.

Additional changes made- I worked with the synth attacks/envelopes. Made a clone synth track and treated it with some different things...panned them 30%. Further eq work to the synths. I multi band limited the bass. Worked with the reverb to add some more detail...or to clean it up a bit...I'm probably done with it for the time being.

    Song sounds good Tim.

Production needs more work IMO. Lots of (too much?!?) low/mids (200-350Hz) making the whole song sound "cloudy" unless that is your intention.

Really cool tune, Tim... liked it very much.  Vocals sounded fine.  My only nit is that I would have liked to have heard more of them.  I'm not sure how much of that is volume and how much of it is the vox getting caught up in the 'wash' of the synths.  This aside, the overall tune sounds great.
