Campaigners call for band to be binned over Hetfield's hunting hobby

An online campaign has been launched to have Metallica removed from the Glastonbury festival bill because of frontman James Hetfield's interest in hunting.

He's described himself as a "keen huntsman" and enjoys travelling round the world to take part in shooting expeditions – and angry anti-hunt campaigners believe that means he shouldn't be associated with the Worthy Farm event.

A Facebook page entitled Remove Metallica has gained over 2500 likes since launching last week. Organisers say: "This page is an appeal to Glastonbury to remove Metallica from their lineup. We believe James Hetfield's support of big-game hunting is incompatible with the spirit of Glastonbury and brings its good name into disrepute."

The campaign has been ignited by the announcement that Hetfield will narrate a History TV series about bear hunting in Alaska. Its producers argue the documentary presents a balanced view, saying: "Brown bear co-existence with humans on the island is a delicate balance, yet is regarded as one of the most successful conservation efforts in the world. Most hunters go after adult males, or boars, who when food is scarce are known to kill and eat cubs, as well as cause trouble near populated areas."

But some people feel the musician's involvement in the show means his band shouldn't perform at Glastonbury. The campaign admin says: "I doubt very much that James Hetfield is the first high-profile big-game hunter to grace the stages – I'm sure there have been many.

"I do however doubt that any of them have had a prime time History show promoting his view that hunting is a good thing to do, on at the same time. This double-exposure gives his views extra publicity and acceptability, and this is where we can have an effect.

"This is about raising awareness and making both Metallica and Glastonbury aware of what appears to be a large number of people's disapproval."

The documentary series, Hunt, is launched on June 8. Metallica are due to headline Glastonbury on June 28. Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson, whose band co-headline Sonisphere with Hetfield and co in July, last week said he'd never consider following them to the Worthy Farm event, branding it "middle-class" and "bourgeois."

Evidently, it's gotten a lot harder to stir up dirt on metal bands lately...

Gimme a frickin' break. If we start worrying about what drummers do in their off-time we're in serious trouble.

We need some old-fashioned bat-biting to remind these pikers what metal music is about.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

People should mind their own business. Most "protesters" of any sort have little if any real knowledge of what they are protesting.
FWIW, I am not a big game hunter. I used to hunt small game but it really isn't worth the trouble, I did get to last year and had fun however... hunting, at least in the civilized world is highly regulated and some game species populations have been helped a lot by management made possible by money from hunting licenses. We have eliminated most of the natural predators and if the game populations are not controlled somehow they become a danger to people and crops (again.. people).
Alligators were hunted to near extinction in some places, hunting was stopped, alligators were relocated and have rebounded so much that they have to be hunted to keep them in check. Coyotes, wolves, bears, and other game populations have to be controlled somehow or they will eat themselves out of food and they will suffer. Deer populations have to be kept in check to keep the number of deer/automobile incidents to a minimum. We have brought them back, we have even repopulated wolves in lots of places and I believe we may come to regret that. A hungry wolf pack without enough prey will come after people and certainly pets. We have had coyotes take pets from people, off leashes, in the city/suburbs around here... nowhere near what anyone would consider rural or wooded.
Wildlife can easily turn from something nice, majestic if you will, to see... into a real pest if not controlled.
We can either have none of them around, we can control the population by hunting, or we can be over run and let ourselves and our food supplies be endangered. Hunting is a responsible way to manage the world and its creatures and keep a balance between the wild and the tame. Nature is not something removed from humans... we are part of nature, human activity is therefore natural, being a part of nature. In the past we have been irresponsible in our lack of conservation. We have learned to use the best methods to preserve healthy populations of wild animals by keeping a balance but not endangering humans by having too many predators.
I just don't understand when people try to make changes in the behavior of other people because of the way the "feel". Some things just make sense, other things are just stupid.
I guess it gives young people a way to think they are doing something. I hope they can just listen to the music. Maybe Metallica will turn up to "11" and drown them out.

BTW.. what exactly does this mean?

Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson, whose band co-headline Sonisphere with Hetfield and co in July, last week said he'd never consider following them to the Worthy Farm event, branding it "middle-class" and "bourgeois."

Is Bruce a communist or is he trying to sound intellectual? I really don't care, I am just wondering.
To each his/her own. Just don't try to tell me what to think, do, or say... I'll return the favor.

Man, how depressing...

Not a day goes by without a comedian having to publicly apologize for using a word or a musician commenting negatively about another artist in his private correspondance. How much hypocrisy, and how un-rock and roll this world has become!

Hi,

It's at times like this that I want to consider this whole thing just pop music, and totally meaningless, so that we can just put on our pacifiers and go suck on a soda during the concert and think that we had a great time! I would rather spend the time getting laid!

From the "Behind the Music". Metallica has sold out. Yeah ... every night! If you don't know that it is all about the greed is good and the bigger it is the greater it all is, then you probably don't care, anyway!

I wouldn't buy a ticket to Glastonbury with Metallica in it, or Iron Maiden for that matter! Over rated and not that good.

I imagine that Glastonburycrap is hurting for money and they know they can make a killing with one of these big number bands instead of 5 smaller bands from the area that only bring in 100 tickets!

There's leadership for you! Teach your kids well and get two wives and lots of money for dope!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Most of the music we actually listen to IS pop music. Metal has not been non-commercial for decades...and that holds true to just about anyone genre the average person can name. So the whole notion of " selling out" is pretentious crap. Pretty much anyone who has actually sold enough records to be a news story " sold out" long before fickle fans label them as such. Unless an entertainer is involved in something beyond heinous in their personal time ( child porn, snuff films, etc) it's hypocritical to bash or praise them on anything beyond their music.
