Completely News User asking for help

I have never used a DAW or created music.  I purchased Sonar x3 and a LaunchKey 49 to try and learn.  I am completely new to this and was wondering if anyone has any newbie pages or tips I could use to help get a start making music.   I am open to any suggestions that anyone could give.  I am truly at a loss as to where to start.  I feel this program (and I) have some great potential but not knowing where to start is rather damning.  Thanks to everyone in advance.

Go to Groove 3  dot com. There you can buy, or subscribe to their service, and learn how to work Sonar and how to record and mix. I suggest the subscription so you can watch all the videos.

First learn Sonar. Then learn how to mix. The learn how to use the EQ and compressors. Then learn all the other effects.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

A no cost introduction may be found in the tutorials included in the Help and the Getting Started area of CakeTV. There is a wealth of information for free and for fee, it might be helpful to provide a little more information about what you want to do such as record instruments, work with MIDI, use audio loops or what styles you are interested in.

It would also help if you told us what kind of music you want to make - if you're looking to record mainly acoustic music with real instruments, the learning curve is going to be a little different than if you're looking to create mainly synth or sample based music.

+1 for a Groove3 subscription. You can get one for $15/month. You'll save by purchasing a year's subscription - believe me, it's worth it. Just about every video you could need to get started is in there, and they have way more than a year's worth of tutorials available for the beginner or intermediate computer musician. Eli Krantzberg's Sonar X3 tutorials are ideal for the beginner and you'll definitely feel a lot more confident after watching them. He has an excellent teaching style which seems to appeal to both beginners and experts alike. Once you start to get the basics of Sonar X3 down, you'll probably want to progress to some of the courses on mixing - EQ, compression, effects etc. Because that's a whole other subject but equally as important.

The CakeTV tutorials scook mentioned are good, although they're not really a structured course because you don't really know where to begin with them. I would watch those after you've gotten the basics of recording down.

I would also join as many audio production forums as you can, even if just to lurk and read through the posts. You'll pick up loads and there are thousands upon thousands of audio geeks out there just itching to give you advice. Try  http://homerecording.com/bbs/ or http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/ or http://www.gearslutz.com/board/

With Sonar open, press F1. This opens the Help file on a page listing a bunch of tutorials that cover the very basics of using Sonar as well as how to set it up in your computer. This is another way of accessing the tutorials linked by scook in the threads above.

A simple 'r' will really help. It will change "learning YOU tool" to "learning YOUR tool" which is what I think you meant. :)

The first stage is to get your hardware and software up and running. After that it's probably best to decide on a direction yourself rather than allowing other people to set your agenda. Try learning by taking one step at a time and whenever you get stuck ask for help here on this forum. Be aware that you will tend to get the best answers here when you focus on a specific issue rather than ask an open-ended question.

Also, there are also a lot of instruction videos to be found on YouTube:

To make music with the tools you listed:

1. You will have to be an artist, songwriter, instrumentalist.
2. You will need to be a recording engineer, to get those ideas down "on tape."

If you want others to listen to your creations.....

3. You will need to be a mix engineer. Or pay someone to do it for you.

If you want your recordings to compete with popular music heard today.....

4. You will need to be a Master engineer. Or pay someone to do it for you.

That is a lot if roles to fill on your own. It will take time, it won't happen in an afternoon, or overnight.

All the suggestions/advice you've gotten so far is the best way to proceed to meet the above objectives.

Welcome,

My advice is to learn Sonar first.  I use Sonar X3 Power!  It is the best manual for Sonar and the author, Scott Garrigus, also has a very helpful website on music as well.

Get yourself a copy of Sonar X3 Power. It's a great way to learn the software and what it can do. The book help me a great deal to find my way around and to learn what the effects do and when to use them. The book also has tutorials for you to work through.

Re: Completely News User asking for help 2014/06/07 10:31:12 (permalink)
On top of the other suggestions I'd like to add spend LOTS of time reading this forum. Particularly this tab to learn about Sonar, the Techniques tab to pick up general knowledge and the Songs forum so you can hear what kind of results others are getting and some insight into how they did it.

A lot of it won't make sense at first but as you go through the tuts, manual, vids and whatever other resources you can get your hands on you'll start to get an idea of what's up and people are constantly posting links to other learning resources.

I came here two years ago and had absolutely NO idea what the heck was going on. Now I can use almost every major function in Sonar and produce full songs from start to finish without too much trouble. They may not sound super polished yet but I'm working on that. lol

Good luck and if you get stumped ask questions. These guys are super helpful. Cheers.

Another option is available at Guitar Center.  If your location has one nearby, they offer free DAW learning sessions on Saturday mornings which are appx 1 hour in length.  Altho they only feature Mac based software, there are basic topics covered which can be applied universally to most any recording software.

One further piece of advice.  You will probably soon come to realise that you need a decent audio interface or soundcard.  Whatever you do, don't buy something without seeking advice here first.

Ha ha, no mastery yet. Been very busy! Thank you very much to everyone who responded and gave advice. I will take everything into account. I will be looking into Groove3 for sure and the Guitar Center tip was great as well!
I am looking to use mostly midi, with a touch of my voice and acoustic electric gutar. Emphasis on the midi. I'm looking to create chiptunes style music crossed with electronica/ dub... Now that I wrote it out it seems like I'm trying way to much haha. I should probably simplify my sound and perfect each aspect then try to combine them after having a greater understanding of the individual parts.
As far as an audio and midi interfaces go, I am using a tascam us-600(audio interface) and a Launchkey 49(midi keyboard) thatI purchased prior to joining the forum. I'm not sure how they compare to higher grade equipment but I was on a budget so I allocated accordingly.

I appreciate everyones advice and I'll post again when I hit a wall.

Have a great one!

Another option is to find someone local who already knows music production and see if they are willing to spend some time with you to help you get the basics down.  There may even be a few people here that might be in your local area and wouldn't mind showing you the basics.

Hey GunGreenEyes and everyone else, I'm exactly in the same boat. I just bought Sonar X3 Professional on Steam, just ordered the Garrigus book at Amazon, I'm watching Cakewalk videos over at YouTube, been playing with the program and listening to the sound samples in the program, marveled at the Matrix view, and generally been enjoying and entertaining myself.  Nice that there is a good forum here as well. Good times and thanks for the suggestions which even though they aren't for me they certainly are for me as well. :)  The magic of a forum.

Scott's X3 Power is a great resource to have on the desktop. Even though he's using X1, Bill Edstoms' "Mixing with Sonar" on Groove3.com is a great video to get familiar with the Sonar workflow. Take your time and post questions to the forum. There's a lot of great people willing to help here.

OT: Gadlaw - Are you the gadlaw from Truefire Forums. Welcome aboard. You put a lot of effort helping people and I hope you get as involved with the Sonar family.

OT: Wow, I've been recognized. I'm always 'gadlaw' online. Thanks very much for the kind words. :) Good people make good forums and as long as you treat people the way you want to be treated life is good. Looks like good people here. There was just a meetup of forum folks at TrueFire headquarters in St Pete Florida this last weekend, all the long time forum guys were there except for me. But I had a good excuse, health issues and I can provide a doctors note.

Back on topic. I did also get 'The Power of Cakewalk Sonar' by William Edstrom, Jr. on Amazon last week. Comes with a disk and nice on topic video overviews of the program. It's not expensive but not as broad as the Sonar X3 Power! book. Like the official Cakewalk videos on YouTube - frequent viewings will help get the terminology and functioning in your head if you are starting at zero with these kind of programs. The best place to start is the beginning.
