The Horizon (Dream Theater meets Periphery meets Killswitch Vibe)
Here is another great collaboration with my student Vince and I. Also collaborating outside the country over to Spain our friend Javi who rocked the guitar solo. Feel free to download the song and let us know what you think. https://soundcloud.com/musicman61554/the-horizon

Generally it sounds OK but it feel like something is missing perhaps a vocal I am not sure.

I definitely like the song - it's a great foundation for a vocal track as Wookie mentioned. Could be killer. Mix-wise, for me the drums sound a bit too ambient and perhaps the cymbals a little squashed for my tastes in this genre. But the guitars are nice and wide and fat, and the keys add a nice touch. PS.... and yeah, it's a nice solo.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. I write all of my songs hoping for vocals. When I finish a song I send it out to numerous vocalists in the area but never get them to bite. So til then my songs will always be a little hallow. I will have to work on the cymbal sound because there is no compression whatsoever on them. Any tips to get them to shine?

Drums are too ambient IMO.

Listening again, I'd try eliminating all FX from the drums - make them bone dry - just to see how they sit in the context of the entire mix like that. And then add from there as needed. For the cymbals, as an example, from the second half of the solo @ 3:05 until the ending section there's an overall high-mid wash that (for me) distracts from everything else going on (which sounds great). Perhaps try swapping those cymbals for something a little darker/shorter duration? Or maybe just lower the volume a little just to see. Err, I mean hear.

Thanks Bapu and Steve. I will work on the drums. It def seems like the hardest instrument especially since they are fake.

I like it all, particularly the guitars. My only difficulty is with the drums. Are you using randomisation on the velocity and quantization?

No, I think the biggest issue is my snare. The sample I use has a ton of reverb at the end of the hit. I think Im going to trim the sample up and see if that helps.

I like to song. To me it has a Periphery vibe (positive comment here) so i would keep the drum upfront but it's just my opinion...A+

The guitar work is really good, love the sweep pick in the solo, great sound to them as well. When is started I thought this was gonna have a Twin Peak feel to it, soon left that. Great piece. The only thing that bugs me is the splash in my right ear, because its hit a lot it seems too loud to my ears and becomes irritating. Cool work thou. G

Just listening through laptop speakers today. Mix seems to work well, drums are very up front but seem positioned nicely for this style. I like it.

Hey, Very cool instrumental with a definite KSE vibe, great guitar tones, tasty playing, and a nice, clean modern sounding mix! Your friend Javi did a dynamite job on the solo, too, nice work by everyone involved, really great stuff! Have a good one! Bob

Thanks a lot Bob. I used the Axe Fx 2 for the guitars and bass. Man that thing is super sexy.
