To which file(s) does Sonar save all its settings?
Anyone knows where the file or folder where all settings, like folder locations and such, is located? Would be nice to be able to backup this to be able just to replace the default one when ever I make a new installation/reinstallation. (Would be nice if Cakewalk inplemented an "export/import all settings-function" for the next Sonar version, actually)

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of that stuff is kept in the Windows registry.

Some stuff is in the AUD.ini file, but the folder locations and likely other information. is stored in the registry. I went on a hunt earlier, when I first saw this post, and couldn't find the folder location information anywhere else, so it must be in the registry. I'll take a look for it in a little bit. I am jamming guitar over a midi version of a Jean Luc Ponty tune I worked up, and I have new strings. Bob Bone

OK - I'll get back to jamming in a sec. The registry location for user file locations in Sonar X3 is stored at: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X3\UserPaths Lots of other info if you back up one level to: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X3 Bob Bone

But you bring up a good point. It's important to copy the Cakewalk Content folder that has track icons, FX chain presets, etc. so that if your computer crashes you can get back all those customizations.

I put most custom files in a separate directory tree and use mklink to integrate the folders into the default SONAR locations or point directly to the custom location in SONAR preferences. This lets me keep areas like "Cakewalk Content" and the user directory, with the exception of the links, at factory settings. It also makes keeping track of customizations easier for me.

Thanks for all the replies, guys! :) So it's in the registry.. thanks Paul for mentioning it and Bob for confirming it! :) Shouldn't be very hard to export what's needed and then just import later on! Steve: Didn't know what mklink until now and I'm still not sure how to use this. I'll check it out. Craig: Yeah. I install Sonar on C:/ but have the content folder located on another drive. That's why I was looking for an easy way of backing up the current folder locations in a good way. I know installing/reinstalling Sonar isn't something you do frequently, but it's nice to not having to locate all those folders every time. They're a bunch.. What are your thoughts about an export/import of Sonar's settings? Maybe one that includes the Content Location Presets as well? Do you think this might be something you'll implement in a near future? :) Cheers!

Yup - wherever any custom content has been placed (any custom track or project templates, FX chain presets, CAL scripts, etc), you should make sure you create a good backup process for keeping a copy elsewhere so that you can restore it in the event of a data loss on whatever drive it lives on. If you wanted to get a backup of all of the names of the folder locations you set up, you could just take a screen shot of the Folder Locations in Preferences, paste that into a Word document, and save it. That would be easier than messing around in the registry. Bob Bone

Here are a couple of examples of how I use mklink in SONAR X3 Producer. I have a directory called E:\Customizations. This directory contains all the customizations to SONAR are stored. "FX Chain Presets" and "Track Templates" are two directories I link into SONAR. The default location for "FX Chain Presets" and "Track Templates" is "C:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR X3 Producer", so I add a link in each folder: mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR X3 Producer\FX Chain Presets\Custom" "E:\Customizations\FX Chain Presets" mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR X3 Producer\Track Templates\Custom" "E:\Customizations\Track Templates" For others directories like Drum Maps and Project Templates, I use the SONAR preferences to point to "E:\Customizations\Drum Maps" and "E:\Customizations\Project Templates" respectively. The decision to use a link or SONAR preferences depends on whether the selection dialog permits diving into subdirectories.
