9 string guitar?
Got to thinking... how about 6 regular strings with 3 doubles on the high side. Kind of like a 12 minus 3 set up.

BC Rich already thought of it - but you have to leave 1 string off.
In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

VOX made a 9 string guitar like you describe in the 60's. E,B,G were doubled and the wound D,A,E were single. Cool guitar if you can find one.

Noel Gallagher once gave me a 9 string guitar. "What's that big knob at the front?" I enquired. "Well mate" he replied, "That's our kid Liam, he's the singer"

Taylor makes an 8 string baritone guitar with 2 added middle strings tuned up an octave. I played on them and they have a unique sound. B E A D G B Since I haven't figured out how to play 6 strings and standard tuning I passed on it.

I prefer a six-string baritone (versus a 7 which is just a normal guitar with an added low B), so this sounds interesting to me. I consider anything with octave strings to play about the same as it would without it (yes I know a 12-string can sound different depending on which direction you pick etc., but I'm talking about the overall width of all strings). That BC Rich also looks very tasty!

I believe that this has already been done by John Mayall in the early 1960s.

Cool. I wasn't thinking I invented it... I just finally got around to appreciating the idea. I was watching a Jimi Hendrix video and it looked like he was playing a twelve string minus 3 strings and I thought... aha! The video was blurry so I don't even know if what I thought I saw was really what I saw... but any ways... I got to thinking.

You might want to check the custom guitars that Egberto Gismonti has made and played in his early days!
