***EXPORTING MIDI***

Hi Folks,
I apologize, I know this is a fundamental question. I have a tune on X2 that is all audio tracks except for a drum track that I dragged in from Band-in-a-Box. Only midi info is showing on the drum track, so I assume it is being played back by either my Line 6 UX-2 interface or the Microsoft Wavetable. My question is how do I get the drums to show up when I export to a .wav file? Everything comes over to the .wav file except the drums. I assume that I have to assign an instrument to them,---how do I do that? Thank you in advance!

When you bring files over from BiaB you can either have them come over as wavs, MIDI or wavs and MIDI.  Those options are in BiaB just prior to the transfer.  So if you are satisfied with the MIDI drum track you can convert it to a wav prior to sending it to Sonar.

Otherwise you need to use the bounce to track option under the track menu.  You will need to know the audio source to do this.  Note that I am not at my music computer to give you the exact terminology and method to do this right now.

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

You need to insert a soft synth in Sonar to hear midi tracks. You sure don't want to use wavetable or probably the original sound from BIAB. That's pretty low quality these days.
Sonar comes with a few soft synth that include drums. TTS-1 is the GM synth.
Use Session drummer or Producer includes Addictive drums. These are way above the GM type sounds as they use real drum samples.

Go read up on using soft synths and you'll never look back.

I have used soft synths before but they always open with the midi and the synth connected, as in SD3. But how do I assign a soft synth to an already existing midi track? When I open a soft synth, it creates a new separate track, how do I assign it to the midi track that is already there?
    Thanks!

Just drag and drop the MIDI into the new MIDI track. OPr you can delete the new MIDI track and route the ins and outs so its played by the new soft synth. Option 1 is easier

Audio and or/midi tracks being created or not, during insert of a soft synth, is controlled by the checked boxes in the Insert Soft Synth Options dialog box.

The Sonar defaults include checked boxes to create tracks for you, and unless you change those, that's what is going to happen.

I long ago made a personal choice to manually insert whatever tracks I needed for every synth I insert, which is the other extreme - but I never get it wrong.  I routinely use multi-timbral soft synths, such as Kontakt, and I find it less of a hassle to build up the tracks needed for however many loaded instruments a given instance of Kontakt will have, versus having Sonar insert a giant bunch of extra tracks that I end up manually deleting anyways.   I would much rather deliberately and carefully control the tracks that appear - again, it is a matter of personal choice.

In any case, you need to read and understand what each of those options do, when checked or not, when you insert a soft synth, and since your needs will undoubtedly change from one insert to the next, the options selected will need to change appropriately, as well.  (another reason I choose to do all track inserts manually - my routine will never change - I add the ones I need every time).

Now, regardless of how any tracks actually did get inserted, YOU control the routing assignments for each and every one of them.  Even if Sonar did the inserts for you, and you have extra tracks created when you really just wanted to assign an existing track to your newly-inserted soft synth, YOU can simply change the assignments for any existing tracks to point to the new synth, and then delete any inserted tracks that you don't need.

YOU control your own destiny - alter or create any routing assignments you wish to, to meet your needs, and be done with it.  :)

All tracks, midi and audio have an output option. Use it.
The midi track stay's where it is and you can assign it's output to any soft synth you have in the rack. Putting it in the track created by the soft synth is not necessary.
