Raided the CD collection...
We haven't bought a new CD since 2007 ( possibly because my mom hasn't had so much time for listening to music anymore ), and of course the post-CD-player lifestyle has made CDs a sorta non-option (with such a big collection). but guys, I found some insane gems in the 'rents CD box; some of the best stuff I've heard in a LONG time. why aint anybody tell me?

I burned my vast CDs collection to MP3. My kids refer to it as "the hardrive." My daughter and all her friends now are big XTC, Clash, Squeeze, Ramones, Pixies, etc. fans. I could not be prouder. I am curious, what insane Gems did you find?

POST 500! And lol, I was asking myself why I didn't mention any in the first post. My parents were never fans of rock on any level so there's pretty much none of that! But I did find a lot of really good swing like Kings of Swing, Sinatra, got a Glenn Miller, got a Coltrane CD, a (Christmas) Manhattan Transfer album, among a lot o' others. i like my jazz.

I think the last CD's I bought were at least 6 or 7 years ago. At the time I was buying a lot of the Naxos classical guitar discs. They were great value for money and featured some stunning music, very well recorded too. I ended up burning them to MP3's. Recently I decided to sample one of them for a fun track I was playing with, and was amazed at how annoying it seemed to have to get it down off the shelf, open the CD draw of my tower and put it on the platter. I almost gave up halfway through.

haha, sharke, that may've been what got me! We have these two big red bins full of cased discs. I ended up burning about half of the ones I picked out to mp3 and putting them on my iPod anyway. Still got another half-stack to go through (about 15-20 discs), but it's already been worth it for me!

ROFL .... I'm still getting rid of the LP's ... even Craig doesn't want to see it and remind himself of all the insane poop in them vinyl frisbees! Just this week got about 20 CD's, and about 12 LP's are now gone! I do have quite a few of these MP3's, but the doing so from a LP is a headache and I gave up! Love the turntable, though!

I'm not that big a fan of MP3's. I found a player that I can load WAV files on and put them on a 32G SD card. Thee's plenty of room on it and I cog an unexpected benefit in that I just copy the files--no conversion needed.

I make a point of grabbing one or two CDs every week when we drop by at WalMart or when I order stuff from Amazon. Everything is ripped to .wav and imported into iTunes. It's been 10 years since I got rid of my last CD player. Everything goes through the computer. My home studio is also my "man cave", so I listen to music in this room mainly, though I do keep music on my iPhone which I use with a speaker/dock downstairs (which has also become one of my go-to places to check mixes). My interest for the physical medium died in the transition from vinyl to cd, but I still like to have the best possible audio quality.

Actually I've been considering getting some stand-alone wave player. I have an iPhone 3gs but literally my 10 apps (music apps like tuners and pitch pipes) and (ahem) decently-sized song library have filled it up. Whatchu using, Jan?

And I have to mention: Coltrane's Giant Steps (the song in particular) is brilliant. It's like it's constantly driving towards resolving to the starting key and then going past to 'try again'. And then there's his lovely tenor virtuosity... gosh, what honey. what honey.

I remember reading a tip from a jazz guitar player (perhaps Larry Coryell) on how to think of the Giant Steps chords to make them easier to solo over. But I've completely forgotten what it was.

Haha, after reading that reply, shark, I've been *trying* (let me emphasize, trying) to play a solo over that chord progression. For some reason, to the ear it sounds rather simple, but I realized I personally have to sort of fall INTO the next chord resolution over the chord triad, otherwise I'm stuck in the previous key improv'ing super atonally. I mean in the wrong key, of course.

I think I'd just experiment with some kind of wacky sounding scale like an augmented or diminished which sort of worked over all the chords in an outside way. Then just go nuts with that one scale. And after all, since it's "jazz," nobody has the right to tell you it's wrong

I have not had issues with them. My listening habits, are about the "experience", not anything else. The best music, for ME, induces visuals and many other things that make my mind trip like crazy. Sometimes it leads me to writing, other times it leads me to just closing my eyes and fly away! The problem here, that I have been telling folks about, is that the "inner experience" has more to do with the music itself, than it does with how it got here. I couldn't CARELESS if it came by boat, or airplane, or spaceship! The important part of it is that IT GOT HERE! I took a good listen to Steven Wilson's redos in KC, for example, and what he did had ZERO effect on me, and the same for his work on Gentle Giant. Sometimes, giving it the illusion that the bass guitar got moved 5 feet to the left does not necessarily change anything in the music at all. It goes back to my earlier days in listening to music, and in specific the "Firebird Suite" and the 3 recordings that we had at home. They were the same piece of music, but the Bernstein interpretation is different than the Stokowski, from the Karahjan! But, even though the "accents" (as I call them) in different places, would seem to change the music visuals for me, because they are different, in the end, they didn't. I still had the same visuals, but the car was green instead of coral blue, for example! I, HONESTLY, feel that we're not discussing the music, when we concentrate on is mp3 good or bad. Who gives a fart? It's the music that matters, and where you and I should be concentrated on, not the "result". This was the reason why I enjoyed, way back when, so many bootlegs ... because it had nothing to do with the fact that they were recorded on someone's shippidycrap hand cassette recorder, but the feeling and energy and emotion of the music and concert itself was priceless. If you don't know the difference between the real thing, and the "recording", you are not fit to be a musician, but a technician or engineer on someone else's music. You can't be in the 4th wall and outside and inside at the same time. These are "polar" opposites! Or as the Firesign Theater used to say, how can you be in two places at once and nowhere at all, at the same time? You CAN'T! And this is what I was trying to convey to RAIN when he was busy "channelling" that piece of music he talked about. Stop 4th walling it. Stay inside and get more of it out! That's your ONLY secret to life in the music!

To be honest, I've come to a point where (to an obvious point) I don't really mind lower-quality recordings and stuff. It IS about the music, being able to celebrate that... I mean, good production and good quality definitely helps that, but being able to put the appreciation of the music first always makes listening more enjoyable.

I'll listen to The Beatles Live at BBC 12 times in a row anytime before almost anything that's been released in the last 15 years. As far as I'm concerned, high quality audio practically died in the 90s. The potential for high quality is unprecedented, but what we actually do with that potential should be enough to justify death penalty.

just picked up two of the recently remastered led zeppelin catalog (2 and 3) other recent buys: QOTSA Like Clockwork Mastodon, Once More 'round the sun Foo Fighters, Wasting Light Humble Pie, Smokin Heart, Fanatic Kruger Brothers, Between the Notes Rush, Clockwork Angels i enjoy listening to cd's so much more than listening to mp3's. when i a/b them back to back, for me, it's always a no contest. i don't want to buy a thousand cd's just to rip wav files... i wish there was a better delivery system. underwhelmed by FLAC, don't use apple for anything, i typically rip 320 kbps mp3's and just run with it for portable sound. but if i'm at home and want to listen to something, i crank up the yamaha amplifier, throw in a cd in my yammy cd player, listen thru my Infinity Efficiency Standards, and groove

What actual file format are '.cda' files? I thought they were just instructions to SOME audio files on the disc? I'm gonna admit I lied above- I have an iPod and iTunes converts the audio files on the cd (I actually don't know the format...) to .m4a, very good sound quality in my opinion (although who am I to say)

If you look at Bob Katz's Honor Roll of Dynamic Recordings, there's very little there from 1990 onwards. In fact that's a great resource to find some really fantastic sounding music. I got into Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" (which is one of the best sounding live albums I've heard) and Joe Jackson's "Body And Soul" through that list. Both of which require that you crank the volume knob a good way in order to obtain the volume you want - always a good sign!

Listening to the Munich/Hamburg shows is the tops for me. The recordings sukkyaki, but the music and the playful banter is great. You can almost see how a "Hard Day's Night" and "Help" were able to come to fruition later. Not to mention material that showed up much later! That old bootleg, still is, a great one for me, and wish I had not lost it to a serious rain downpour here in Vancouver that one time took away almost 100 albums from my collection! the Beatles Christmas show was the other one.
