A Sample Rate Oddity...

Hello
I'm observing some interesting behaviour.

I have Focusrite Saffire Mix Control (the control panel for my audio interface) set at 48 kHz.

If I open X3E (without opening a project) it changes Mix Control to 44.1 KHz and then immediately flips it back to 48khz - Which is where it should be, but why is the value flipping at all?

Sometimes when I open projects Mix Control stays at 44.1 kHz rather than 48 kHz. Opening and closing Sonar several times seems to rectify it (so this is intermittent issue probably down to timing as it takes about a second to switch from one sample rate to the other with all this flipping of samples rates going on).

Please note:
* The project is set at 48 kHz.
* Under preferences the default settings for new projects project is set at 48000.
* The windows settings for the interface is set at 48000
* I often open Sonar projects (when Sonar isn't running) by right clicking the Sonar icon and selecting a project so both Sonar and the project opens at the same time.
* I don't run Sonar as Administrator.

I would blame drivers, but why does Sonar(?) switch to 44.1kHz and then back (or maybe the drivers are doing this?)... Odd... Anybody else have this?

Thanks!

Alex

I have seen this but forget exactly why. I shifted to 48Khz for a bit and remember the preferences on both apps need to match. I forget all of the logistics with it though.

I don't have my interface as my default audio device in Windows, and also don't have this issue.

To clarify I have 48Khz set everywhere possible for the Focusrite (well where I've explained in #1), and the Focusrite is not my default audio device in Windows.

Cheers!

I'll continue to see if I can get more info. BTW "Share Drivers with other programs" in unticked in Sonar, and in Windows "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" and "Give exclusive mode applications priority" is ticked.

Yes I got that. But often hardware has a setup too. How would you change the sample rate without Mix control?

I was just looking at the Saffire manual for stand alone operation. In it you can save the settings from the Mix Control to hardware. I wonder if that would help you in this. My thinking is that the hardware is set to default and by saving the preferred sample rate to the hardware it will boot up with that and not revert back to 44.1.

Alex, the latest version of mix control is 3.4. Do you have the latest versin. Not sure it will solve your problem but worth a shot.

Re: A Sample Rate Oddity... 2014/07/07 20:52:50 (permalink)
I just did a quick test of this to verify what I was thinking. I first bring the Saffire online without SONAR open. At that point, sample rate can be changed. When SONAR is open, the Saffire allows SONAR to take control of sample rate, so even setting the Saffire to 48 and opening a 44.1 project in SONAR will make the Saffire immediately switch to 44.1.

To effectively create a project with a different sampling rate, all that is required is the "Default Settings for New Projects" under Preferences->Audio->Driver Settings. When SONAR is open, SONAR controls the Saffire sample rate based on the project.

Other things you mentioned:
- I run SONAR as administrator
- Share drivers with other programs is unchecked
- In Windows Control Panel, both exclusive modes in the Saffire Properties are checked, and it is NOT the default Windows device (specifically this is assigned to my onboard audio).
