16 bit to 24 bit

Hi

I need to make a 48 kHz project 24 bit from 16 bit. I appreciate audio quality won't improve (it's going to be redone anyway) but softsynths will.

I guess I will need to export and import into a new project. Wondering what is the best/quickest format to choose for this...

Thanks!!

Alex

Change the "Record Bit Depth" in Preferences > File > Audio Data and save the project.

Yeah, it is that easy. There is no conversion performed on the existing audio. New data will be recorded at the new bit depth. Sample rate change is another matter.

Between all of us folks scook has helped, we should have turned him into a virtual alcoholic long long ago, with all of the virtual beers we have given him.

It's amazing he can still clink so thearly.

It is not just that audio quality will not change, neither will the quality of the recorded softsynths. An increase in the sampling rate from less than 44.1 KHz might arguably increase the quality of audio data from any source. I say arguably because the point is frequently argued here as to whether a further increase in the sampling rate above CD quality will yield more accuracy in reproduction. If you softsynth has the kind of antialiasing filters on its output that most AD converters have on their input so that the synth output is for all practical purposes a band limited audio range signal, increasing the sampling frequency above the Nyquist probably does not improve accuracy.

In any case increasing the bit depth of the sample will never improve accuracy, but will only provide a greater dynamic range. Since the dynamic range of the 16 bit audio representation is pretty much everything you can hope for in terms of sounds from just perceptible to literally ear splitting, 24 bit does not improve the representation of music, but it gives an enormous cushion against clipping.

I think SONAR's been supporting multiple bit depths inside the same project since version 4 or 5.

Inside of Sonar everything is either 32bit or 64 bit floating point (if you have double precision enabled).

The bit depth settings only affect audio entering or leaving Sonar, either to your audio interface or disk.
